CSUN Visits Portland, Portland State in Road Tests

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (1-7) visits the Pacific Northwest for a pair of games this week. The Matadors take on Portland on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before taking on Portland State on Friday at 7:35 p.m. Live streams will be available for both games while Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister are on the call in audio broadcasts on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
The Matadors picked up their first win of the season this past Saturday, defeating Fresno State 73-72. CSUN erased a 10-point second-half deficit as junior Terrell Gomez led the way with 21 points after halftime. Gomez made five of his seven 3-pointers in the second half and would earn his way to the line with four seconds left and the Matadors trailing by one. The 5-8 guard calmly made both free throws and CSUN withstood a last-second chance for the Bulldogs to earn the win. CSUN's win over Fresno State was the Matadors' first over a Mountain West Conference team since the 2000-01 season.Â
Gomez finished with 31 points on 9-of-20 shooting despite missing his first five shots. Junior Lance Coleman II added 14 points while sophomore Darius Brown II had 14 points and nine assists and sophomore Elijah Harkless chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds. As a team, the Matadors made 12-of-28 from 3-point range (42.9 percent) and converted on 15-of-17 from the free throw line (88.2 percent).
For his efforts last week, Gomez was named Big West Player of the Week on Monday. Gomez averaged 30.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in a 1-1 week for the Matadors, which also included an 85-84 loss at Green Bay. He shot an even 50.0 percent from the field (20-for-40) including 47.8 percent from 3-point range (11-for-23). He would also make all 10 of his shots from the free throw line in the two games. Gomez is currently second in team history in career 3-point field goals made with 212 but just 16 off the pace from all-time leader Josh Greene. He is also 13th in CSUN history with 1,180 career points.
In the nation, Gomez enters the week seventh in 3-point field goals made (30), eighth in 3-point field goals made per game (37.5) and 15th in points per game (22.1). Brown II is currently ranked 10th in the country in assists to turnover ratio (3.8) and 39th in assists per game (5.6). Gomez currently leads the Big West in points per game while Brown II is tops in assists per game and assists to turnover.
Portland owns a 4-1 edge over the Matadors in the all-time series. The Pilots have won the last two in the series including an 80-77 decision at The Matadome last season where Gomez led all scorers with 25 points. CSUN is 1-2 all-time against the Pilots on the road but all three of those games took place from 1964-67 with CSUN winning the last meeting 80-72 on Dec. 1967.
CSUN holds a 10-5 lead in the series with Portland State. The Matadors won the teams' last meeting, which took place in Dec. 2015 in Portland by a 77-71 score. Micheal Warren led the Matadors with 15 points in the win. CSUN has won four of seven all-time meetings on the road in the series.
A Closer Look at Portland
The Pilots come in with a 6-1 record including a 4-0 mark at home after defeating Incarnate Word, 65-56, this past Sunday. After an early-season loss at USC, Portland has won the last five games. Portland went 7-25 last season and 0-16 in the West Coast Conference. Head coach Terry Porter is in his fourth season at the helm.
Graduate Isaiah White is averaging a team-high 15.3 points per game while posting a 48.1 field goal percentage. Also averaging in double figures, junior JoJo Walker is posting 13.8 points on 51.9 percent shooting including an impressive 53.6 3-point shooting percentage. On the glass, junior Jacob Tryon leads the squad with 4.7 rebounds per game. As a team, the Pilots are second in the nation in 3-point percentage (44.6).
A Closer Look at Portland State
The Vikings are 3-5 on the year after dropping two of three last week. Portland State defeated Grambling State 84-74 but fell at UC Santa Barbara (81-70) and Oregon State (81-76) over Thanksgiving week. Last season, the Vikings went 16-16 with an 11-9 Big Sky Conference record. Head coach Barret Peery is in his third season with the Vikings.
A preseason All-Big Sky selection, junior Holland Woods is sporting a team-high 19.5 points to go with 4.8 assists per game. Senior Matt Hauser is also off to a strong start to the year, averaging 16.1 points and 5.0 rebounds. Fellow senior, Rashaad Goolsby, has pulled down 7.6 rebounds per game while he has scored 7.8 points. As a team, Portland State is ranked second in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (16).
