CSUN Drops 3-2 Decision to Stanford at LSU Invitational
2/24/2019 4:44:00 PM | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. - Junior Jessica Alexander belted her second homerun of the season to temporarily tie the score before Stanford scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to hold off the Matadors 3-2 in CSUN's final game of the LSU Invitational Sunday at Tiger Park.
After defeating Memphis in their Invitational opener on Friday, the Matadors dropped their next four games to slip to 4-9 on the young season.
Â
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Stanford 3, CSUN 2
LOCATION: Tiger Park - Baton Rouge, La.
RECORDS: Stanford 11-2, CSUN 4-9
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Jillian James (2-4), who no-hit Memphis in the tournament opener, started in the circle for the Matadors and kept the Cardinal scoreless over the first three innings, scattering three hits.
• Stanford then struck for a pair of runs in the fourth inning. After James struck out the lead-off batter, Montana Dixon walked before Emily Schultz sent a 3-1 pitch over the wall for a two-run homerun.
• The score remained 2-0 Stanford until the sixth when Mackenzie Babbitt singled with two outs. Alexander then sent a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall tying the score at 2-2.
• The lead would be short-lived however, as Stanford worked a leadoff walk before Taylor Gindlesperge reached on an error. With two outs, Teaghan Cowles delivered a double to left center to knock in Gindlesperge with what would be the decisive run.
• CSUN threatened in the seventh when Kenedee Jamerson led off with a single before being erased on a double play. Kiarra Crockett-Pope then grounded out to end the game. Â
• In addition to her second homerun of the season, Alexander added a single in the first to raise her batting average to .372.

ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TAIRIA FLOWERS
"We challenged Stanford and kept ourselves in the game. One or two pitches and it's a different outcome. I'm glad we responded after a tough Saturday, I'm looking forward to good practice days ahead."Â
