CSUN Sweeps On Day 1 Of Judi Garman Classic

FULLERTON, Calif.—CSUN swept a pair of games on the first day of the Judy Garman Classic Friday at Cal State Fullerton.

CSUN continues the Judi Garman Classic Saturday weather permitting against No. 3/3 Florida (20-2) at 10 a.m.
GAME 1
- CSUN defeated Connecticut 6-3 to begin the tournament.
- Haileigh Gonzalez keyed a three-run rally in the bottom of the first with a home run. Kiarra Crockett-Pope and Jessica Alexander added RBI during the frame.
- An Olivia Sappington groundout to second to plate Ashley Esty to get the Huskies on the board.
- UConn tied the score in the fifth as Briana Marcelino and Carli Cutler both drove in runs.
- Kiarra Crockett-Pope returned the lead to the Matadors with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.
- Gonzalez led the Matadors as she went 3-for-3.
GAME 2
- CSUN defeated UTSA 2-1 in the nightcap.
- Jillian James struck out 11 through the first 4.2 innings before a walk and the first two UTSA hits of the game loaded the bases for Bailee Baldwin. Baldwin worked the count to 3-2 before flying out to center to end the inning.
- A two-out Mackenzie Babbitt RBI single in the bottom of the fifth drove in Aaliyah Swan for the game's first run.
- CSUN loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. UTSA got the first out on a 5-2 fielder's choice. Swan's blooper to center drove in Gonzalez to put the Matadors up by two but UTSA was able to get an out on the play. A 5-6 fielder's choice from the Roadrunners wrapped up the inning.
- James struck out 12 in six innings of work. Kenedee Jamerson, who was the winning pitcher in the opener, came on in relief in the seventh. She struck out Victoria Villareal to open the seventh.
- Hailey Garza doubled to bring up pinch-hitter Madison Washington. Washington reached on catcher's interference. A CSUN error loaded the bases for Celeste Loughman.
- Loughman's sac fly to center drove in Garza. Kira Cauley's throw went home before Raquel Jaime, the CSUN catcher threw down to Jessica Alexander who tagged out Elexus Trenkle for the final out of the game.
- Jaime and Swan both went 2-for-3 to pace the Matadors. James and Jamerson combined on a three-hitter.

- "We had people step up today in big situations. Either catches defensively, pitching, and timely hits. We still can sure up some things but I was pleased with how we battled today."
