FORÂ STARTERS
After opening the 2019 season last week, the CSUN Matadors (1-4) host Cal State LA Tuesday at 11 a.m. before traveling to Pismo Beach for a pairs tournament with Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield on Saturday. The pairs tournament will feature bracket play with all three schools fielding six pairs.
Last week, CSUN split its home-opening dual against No. 13 Loyola Marymount (L, 5-0) and Vanguard (W, 5-0) before dropping three dual matches at the Zuma Classic in Malibu.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Cal State LAÂ (1-4) opened the season with a 5-0 win at Santa Monica College before dropping its last four dual matches. The Golden Eagles fell at CSU Bakersfield (5-0) and Vanguard (4-1) in Bakersfield and to Long Beach State (5-0) and Long Beach City College (4-1) last week in Long Beach.
Series History
The Matadors are 3-0 all-time against Cal State LA all coming straight sets in Northridge. CSUN defeated the Golden Eagles once in 2017 before sweeping Cal State LA twice last season.Â
TO RECAP
After splitting the season-opening home dual, CSUN fell by the score of 4-1 to eighth-ranked Long Beach State, CSU Bakersfield and No. 3 Pepperdine at the Zuma Classic on Saturday. Against Long Beach State, the Matadors picked up a point in the No. 5 pair as Cassidy Rosso and Kailey Klein defeated Tyler Spriggs and Claire Newlander in straight sets (21-19, 21-18). In the middle dual against the Roadrunners, Taylor Brydon and Lauren McMurray picked up CSUN's lone win (21-9, 21-16) over Ally Barber and Rafa Bonifacio in the No. 4 match. Looking for their first ever win over Pepperdine in beach volleyball, the Matadors dropped the first four matches before Honeycutt and Maughan picked up a 21-17, 21-16 win over Alexis Filippone and Maddie Dilfer at No. 2.
BIG WEST BEACH VOLLEYBALL
This season marks CSUN's fourth season as a member of the Big West Conference in beach volleyball. The Matadors, seeded fourth in the six-team field in Hawai'i in 2018, were upset by fifth-seeded CSU Bakersfield in the opening round (3-2) before falling to No. 2 seed Cal Poly in an elimination match (5-0).The Matadors were also seeded fourth at the 2017 Big West Tournament held at Pismo Beach, but fell to Sacramento State (3-2) and Cal Poly (5-0) in their two tournament matches.
In 2016, CSUN was the third seed in the conference tournament before finishing 2-2 including a close 3-2 loss to Cal Poly in a third round elimination match at Huntington Beach. CSUN will host the 2019 Big West Tournament, scheduled for Apr. 26-27, at Zuma Beach in Malibu.
