LONG BEACH, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (16-19, 4-5 BWC) dropped the rubber game with Long Beach State by the final of 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at Blair Field. Sophomore Brandon Bohning finished 3-for-4 with a run scored while junior Sean Skelly had two hits including his team-best sixth home run of the season.
Â
The Dirtbags would break up a 3-3 tie in the fifth and hold on in the late innings to take the series.
Â
GAME BREAKDOWN
For the third-straight game, the Matadors struck first to take an early lead. In the top of the first, Bohning and Kyle Barret singled to start the inning then Skelly drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out. Jose Ruiz followed with a single through the right side to plate Bohning. LBSU starter Zak Baayoun picked up a key 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Victor Cerny but the Matadors' second run came across to put CSUN up 2-0.
Â
Freshman Blake Sodersten surrendered a run in the home half of the first on a wild pitch, but the right hander stranded a runner at second base when he retired Jake Vander Wal to end the frame.
Â
CSUN took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third where the Dirtbags racked up three hits in a two-run frame. Sodersten gave up a leadoff triple to Brooks Stotler followed by an RBI single to Jacob Hughey to square the game. Three batters later, Chris Jimenez drove in the go-ahead run with a single to plate Hughey, giving LBSU a 3-2 lead.
Â
The Matadors fought back to even the game once more in the top of the fifth. Denzel Clarke began the frame with a walk then Bohning singled to put runners at the corners. Barret came through with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-3 game. CSUN looked for more in the inning as Bohning stole second base but he would be caught stealing at third base moments later. Skelly would follow with a two-out hit before Ruiz grounded out to end the inning.
Â
The Matador bullpen helped keep the Dirtbags off the scoreboard in the fourth but two CSUN errors in the fifth help spark a three-run frame for Long Beach State. An error at first base and a Chase Luttrell single put runners at the corners before Jake Vander Wal stroked an RBI single. An error in right field on the play allowed Vander Wal to make it all the way to third base while a second run scored. Jimenez added on another RBI hit to put the Dirtbags ahead 6-3.
Â
CSUN would fall behind 7-3 in the sixth on an RBI hit from Luttrell. However, the Matadors got back into the scoring column in the top of the eighth on one swing of the bat. Skelly would stroke a 1-0 pitch over the left-center field wall for his second home run of the weekend.
Trailing 7-4 in the ninth, Andrew Lucas began the frame with a single to bring the tying run to the on-deck circle. Lucas eventually advanced to second base on a wild pitch but the Matadors would get no closer as three-straight batters were retired on fly outs to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Bohning collected his 14th multiple-hit game of the season, tying Barret for the team lead. Lucas' hit in the ninth extended his on-base streak to a team-high 15-straight games while his hitting streak stretched to 13 in a row. Ruiz has also reached base in 13 consecutive games.
Sophomore Blake Schriever worked 2.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen, striking out three batters.
For Long Beach State, Baayoun worked six innings and allowed three runs to pick up the win. Jimenez finished 3-for-4 with two RBI.
