Matadors Fall at #21 UC Irvine to Open Series
4/18/2019 10:54:00 PM | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (16-20, 4-6 BWC) dropped its series opener at No. 21 UC Irvine (23-9, 6-4 BWC) 7-1 on Thursday evening at Anteater Ballpark. Junior Angelo Bortolin collected one of the team's four hits including the Matadors' lone RBI. Out of the bullpen, senior Theron Kay tossed 3.2 shutout innings, giving up a hit to go with four strikeouts.
Facing the nationally-ranked Anteaters, the Matadors' bats were held in check while UCI scored six runs over a two-inning stretch to take control of the contest.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Wesley Moore kept the Anteaters scoreless through the first two innings as he faced the minimum over that span. However, UCI broke through in the bottom of the third inning to take the early lead. Jake Palmer collected an RBI groundout and Adrian Damla stroked an RBI single to give the Anteaters a 2-0 lead. Moore would load the bases on a walk to Mike Peabody before retiring Christian Koss to limit the damage.
Â
The Anteater bats though came alive in the fourth inning to stretch their lead to six runs. Six of the first seven batters reached base safely on singles, highlighted by a two-run single from Palmer. After the Palmer hit, UCI picked up two more singles followed by an RBI groundout from Peabody that put CSUN in a 6-0 hole.
On the flip side, UCI starter Andre Pallante frustrated the Matadors throughout his seven innings of work. Pallante faced the minimum through the first four innings before Sean Skelly notched the Matadors' first hit to lead off the top of the fifth. Later in the fifth, Austin Elder worked a two-out walk before Bortolin came through with an RBI single up the middle to cut the Anteater lead to 6-1.
CSUN threatened again in the sixth inning as Robert Bullard worked a leadoff walk and Kyle Barret roped a single two batters later. However, Pallante served up a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Skelly to end the inning. Pallante would work a clean top of the seventh inning before giving way to the Anteater bullpen.
After UC Irvine stretched its lead to 7-1 in the home half of the fifth, the Matadors' bullpen blanked the opposition the rest of the way. Kay worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth before finding his rhythm over the next three innings. Following a leadoff double from Peabody in the sixth, Kay retired the next nine batters in a row, racking up three strikeouts.
The Matadors though would be unable to make up any ground against UC Irvine reliever Michael Frias. Over the final two frames, Frias allowed just a single as the Anteaters nailed down the 7-1 win.
GAME NOTES
Coming on as a defensive replacement in the eighth, freshman Josh Cerpa notched his first career hit, a single, in the top of the ninth. On the pitching side, freshman Dwayne Angebrandt retired two batters and scattered three hits before being lifted for Kay in the bottom of the fifth.
For UC Irvine, Palmer finished with a game-high three RBI while four Anteaters finished with two-hit games.
