Matadors Lose Heartbreaker at #21 UC Irvine
4/19/2019 10:20:00 PM | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif.---A costly error in the bottom of the ninth allowed the winning run to come across for UC Irvine as CSUN Baseball (16-21, 4-7 BWC) fell to the 21st-ranked Anteaters (24-9, 7-4 BWC) 4-3 on Friday evening at Anteater Ballpark. Freshman Andrew Lucas finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and his fourth home run of the season. CSUN received quality pitching throughout the night including CSUN starter Isaiah Nunez, who worked 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs.
CSUN rallied back from two different deficits but the Anteaters would scratch across the winning run in their last at bat to claim the weekend series.
GAME BREAKDOWN
UC Irvine cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the second inning against Nunez. After the left hander retired the first two batters of the inning, he surrendered a double to Christian Koss then a walk to Griffin Mazur. Sam Ireland delivered the big blow, a two-run double that gave UCI the early lead.
Nunez would bounce back over the next two innings, blanking the Anteaters in back-to-back scoreless frames to give the Matadors an opportunity to rally.
In the early innings, CSUN could not muster much offense against UCI starter Tanner Brubaker as the right hander took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. The Matadors were able to place runners at the corners with two outs in the fourth after an error and a hit batter but Brubaker retired Jose Ruiz to end the frame.
Things would turn around in the fifth beginning with a leadoff triple from Lucas. Austin Elder followed with an RBI single on the first pitch to cut the Anteater lead to one. A sacrifice bunt from Denzel Clarke would eventually move Elder to second base, giving Brandon Bohning an opportunity to punch in the tying run with a single up the middle.
The Anteaters would answer in the home half of the fifth, capitalizing on CSUN errors to take back the lead. Mazur reached base to start the inning on a fielding error at shortstop. Nunez rallied to retire the next two batters but Brandon Lewis collected a single to right field. Another fielding error, this time in right field, on the play allowed Mazur to come all the way home, giving UCI a 3-2 advantage.
CSUN committed its third error in the sixth, which eventually gave the Anteaters a chance to have runners at second and third with two outs. Nunez would be lifted in favor of Blaine Traxel, who worked his way out of trouble by striking out Ireland.
Lucas flexed his muscles in the top of the seventh with a game-tying home run to left field. Later in the frame, Clarke walked and eventually reached second base with one out but the next two batters were retired in order by Brubaker.
The Matadors nearly fell behind in the eighth inning as UCI loaded the bases with nobody out. CSUN called upon Blake Schriever to put out the fire and he did so in impressive fashion. Schriever struck out Koss, Mazur and Ireland all swinging to emphatically end the inning.
Much like earlier in the game, defense came back to bite the Matadors in the bottom of the ninth. Schriever gave up a leadoff single but he struck out the next batter for the first out. Adrian Damla would stroke a single to right field, allowing pinch runner Matt Reitano to reach third. On the play, a fielding error in right gave Reitano a chance to round third and touch home plate to give UCI the victory.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"Nunez threw well again today as did Traxel and Schriever. I like how hard we're playing. It's a matter of getting young guys to push it over the top."
GAME NOTES
Bohning's two-RBI performance give him a team-best seven multiple-RBI games this season. With a walk in the sixth, Skelly has reached base in nine-straight games.
Traxel finished with 1.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits while Schriever worked 1.1 innings, striking out four batters and giving up an unearned run.
