CSUN's Late Rally Not Enough in 4-3 Loss to Hawai'i
4/26/2019 6:58:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (17-23, 4-9 BWC) rallied to erase a three-run deficit in the seventh but Hawai'i scored a run in the eighth to edge the Matadors 4-3 on Friday afternoon at Matador Field. Freshman Andrew Lucas went 3-for-4 with an RBI while senior Kyle Barret drove in two runs in the seventh inning. Sophomore Wesley Moore just missed a quality start as he tossed 5.2 innings, surrendering three runs on six hits to earn a no-decision.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Moore worked out of trouble in the first inning, leaving two base runners on when he struck out Alex Baeza to end the frame. Two innings later, the Rainbow Warriors loaded the bases against Moore with one out but would crack the scoring column this time. Moore battled Ethan Lopez to a 3-2 count before issuing a walk to force in the game's first run. Moore though struck out Baeza again and retired Dylan Calicdan.
Moore tossed a shutout fourth inning, picking up a key inning-ending double play. Hawai'i though stuck again in the fifth as Brennen Hancock doubled the Hawai'i lead with a one-out RBI double. Lopez then made it a 3-0 game with an RBI single. Robert Bullard would make a heads up play in left field, throwing out Lopez who tried to stretch the single into a double.
CSUN had little success scoring against Cade Smith in the early innings despite having base runners in four of the first five frames. In the second, the Matadors picked up two walks and a single from Brandon Bohning but a 6-3 double play in the inning limited the damage.
The Matadors managed three hits through the first six innings against Smith. However, things turned around in the seventh as Bullard and pinch hitter Jose Ruiz picked up singles with one out. Up over 100 pitches, Smith was lifted from the game in favor of reliever Jeremy Wu-Yelland. Denzel Clarke would work the count full against Wu-Yelland before taking ball four to load the bases. Lucas followed with another walk, forcing in the Matadors' first run.
After another pitching change brought closer Dylan Thomas into the game, Barret stepped to the plate and hit a bouncing ground ball to short. Lopez gobbled up the ball and flipped to second baseman Maaki Yamazaki who then threw to first looking to complete the double play. Barret though beat out the relay at first base, which allowed Ruiz to score. In a hustle play, Clarke rounded third and also touched home plate to tie the game.
It would be a battle of the closers in the late innings with the game even at 3-3. CSUN's stopper Blake Schriever entered out of the bullpen in the top of the eighth and was able to retire the first batter before giving up a walk to Dallas Duarte. A passed ball eventually moved Duarte to second base then Tyler Murray came through with an RBI single. Schriever gave up another single before inducing a 4-3 double play off the bat of Scotty Scott to end the inning.
CSUN threatened in the eighth and ninth innings against Thomas but was unable to come away with the timely hit. In the eighth, the Matadors had runners at second and third base with two outs before Thomas stuck out Ruiz. An inning later, Thomas surrendered one-out singles to Lucas and Barret but induced a 6-3 double play to end the game.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"They did a good job of getting the big hit. We also allowed too many free base runners - to give up that many hits and base runners, it's tough to keep the scoring down. You have to make some big pitches at the same time.
Lucas had another good game. He had balanced at bats - he handled breaking balls and handled fastballs. I thought he was good all day. We played good defense today. First steps were good, we turned a couple of double plays that were key but they were also good plays."
GAME NOTES
Lucas and Barret have now hit safely in 12 of 13 Big West games. Bullard finished 2-for-3 with a run scored as he collected his 10th multiple-hit game of the season.
For Hawai'i, Thomas earned the win by tossing 2.2 shutout innings, scattering four hits. Scott went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
UP NEXT
The Matadors continue their weekend series with Hawai'i on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. A video stream of the game will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call.
