Matadors Even Series With 10-2 Win Over Hawai'i
4/27/2019 4:42:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Senior Isaiah Nunez allowed a run over 7.1 innings as CSUN Baseball (18-23, 5-9 BWC) defeated Hawai'i 10-2 to even its weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. Nunez scattered nine hits in the contest and picked up three strikeouts to notch his seventh win of the season. Junior Sean Skelly finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored while junior Robert Bullard tallied two hits and three RBI and freshman Josh Cerpa drove in three runs.
The Matadors scored multiple runs in four innings and notched 10 runs for the eighth time this season in a wire-to-wire win over the Rainbow Warriors.
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Matadors were retired in order in the first two innings before the bottom of the order sparked a three-run third inning. Skelly kicked off the inning with a double into the left-center gap. After Austin Elder reached on an infield single, Cerpa executed a safety squeeze to bring in the game's first run. Bullard would walk to put two runners on base before Jose Ruiz came through with a two-run double off the right-field wall.
An inning later, the Matadors came through with a pair of key two-out hits to double their lead. Angelo Bortolin worked a leadoff walk and Skelly reached on an infield single in the frame as Cerpa stepped to the plate with two outs. The freshman would go up the middle for a single to plate both runners before advancing to second base on an error committed by center fielder Scotty Scott. Moments later, Bullard delivered an RBI single to bring in Cerpa and give CSUN a 6-0 lead.
The lead would be more than enough for Nunez as the left hander held the Rainbow Warriors off the scoreboard for most of the afternoon. The Matadors also provided Nunez with strong defense in the ballgame. In the second, with a runner on first base, Nunez gave up a single to Dallas Duarte before Andrew Lucas threw out Daylen Calicdan attempting to advance from first to third base. Nunez escaped the second inning by picking off Dallas Duarte in-between first and second base.
Hawai'i would be successful in recording hits against Nunez on Saturday but the left hander would be stingy with runners on base. Nunez gave up hits in the third, fifth and sixth but no runs scored in any of those frames.
CSUN got back into the scoring column in the home half of the sixth. Two of the first three batters reached in the inning before Bullard added to his RBI total with a two-run single through the left side of the infield.
Hawai'i broke up the shutout in the seventh inning, plating an unearned run against Nunez but the Matadors took advantage of a Hawai'i miscue in the bottom of the seventh to score twice more. The two runs came in after an athletic exhibition from Denzel Clarke on the base paths. Following a two-out walk by Skelly to load the bases, Clarke advanced from second to third base but took a wide turn and was caught in-between third and home plate. After a series of throws down the third base line, Clarke evaded multiple tags and eventually made it back to third base safely. Elder would then reach base on an error from second baseman Maaki Yamazaki that led to Clarke and Bohning scoring.
Nunez retired the first batter of the eighth before being lifted from the game. Theron Kay came out of the bullpen and sat down the next two batters, keeping CSUN ahead by a nine-run margin. Hawai'i though plated a run in the top of the ninth via a home run from Calicdan but it would not be enough as Stone Shiffman shut the door on a CSUN 10-2 win.
GAME NOTES
Bullard notched his 11th multiple-hit game of the season while Ruiz went 2-for-4 to pick up his seventh multiple-hit effort. Cerpa's three-RBI game is a career best for the freshman. Nunez has now thrown seven quality starts this season and given up one run or fewer in four starts.
For Hawai'i, Calicdan finished with three hits to go with his home run.
UP NEXT
The Matadors go for the series win against Hawai'i on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. A video stream of the game will air live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call.
