Doremus' Grand Slam Lifts CSUN to Series Win Over Hawai'i
4/28/2019 5:11:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Junior Blake Doremus hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh inning to lead CSUN Baseball (19-23, 6-9 BWC) to a 6-3 comeback win over Hawai'i (18-22, 7-8 BWC) on Sunday afternoon at Matador Field. Senior Kyle Barret, sophomore Brandon Bohning and freshman Josh Cerpa each had two hits with Barret collecting an RBI. Freshman Blake Sodersten worked five innings, allowing three runs but only one earned run on the day.
CSUN trailed 3-2 in the seventh inning before Doremus' big fly helped CSUN secure a series win over the Rainbow Warriors for the second-straight season.
GAME BREAKDOWN
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"My takeaway is that we're playing well in halves of games and we're playing a little sloppy in other halves. Give the team credit for continuing to play. I want to get sharper in those early innings."
BLAKE DOREMUS SAID
"Coach told me an inning earlier to get ready to hit. I knew what I needed to do - get my back stretched a little bit and get some swings. I went into the at bat mainly trying to get on top of the ball - not trying to do too much, hit the ball in the gap and just move some guys over. Do the simple job, not the big job."
GAME NOTES
Daddario picked up his first career win in a Matador uniform by working 1.1 shutout innings, striking out two. Schriever's eight saves this season are tied for the sixth-most in a single season in team history.
Doremus' grand slam is the Matadors' second of the season with the first coming on April 6 off the bat of Wesley Ghan-Gibson against UC Riverside. Last Tuesday, Doremus also hit a game-tying home run in the seventh inning in an eventual 7-4 win at California Baptist.
UP NEXT
The Matadors return to action next Friday to take on UC Santa Barbara in the first of a three-game series at Matador Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

CSUN trailed 3-2 in the seventh inning before Doremus' big fly helped CSUN secure a series win over the Rainbow Warriors for the second-straight season.
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Rainbow Warriors took advantage of a pair of CSUN errors in the opening inning to plate two runs against Sodersten. Scotty Scott reached on a fielding error at shortstop to kick off the inning and he eventually scored on a throwing error from center field when he tried to advance from second to third. Daylen Calicdan made it a 2-0 game on an RBI single with two outs.
Sodersten though would bounce back to blank Hawai'i over the next four frames despite giving up five hits. In the fifth, Sodersten was aided by strong defense behind him in a shutout frame. After a single from Alex Baeza, Ethan Lopez tried to score from first base. Andrew Lucas was able to make a quick throw into the infield where Bohning made a strong relay to home plate. Catcher Victor Cerny and third baseman Cerpa played catch before Cerny applied the tag on Lopez.
CSUN would strike back in the third inning behind two-out hitting from Barret. With runners at first and second base and one out, Cerpa was thrown out at third base. Moments later, Barret came through with a timely RBI double down the left field line to bring in Clarke all the way from first base.
Two innings later, the Matadors drew even on another two-out hit, this time from Jose Ruiz. Cerpa doubled to begin the inning and later made it to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Clarke. Eventually, Barret worked a two-out walk to put runners at the corners. Ruiz stepped to the plate next and deposited a double into the left field to tie the game at 2-2.
However, Hawai'i surged back in front in the sixth inning on RBI single from Scott. The Rainbow Warriors eventually loaded the bases with one out but a trio of Matador relievers teamed up to work out of the jam. In a pivotal play, Brennen Hancock hit a comebacker to Theron Kay near home plate. Kay quickly pounced on the ball and sent a shovel pass to Cerny to get the force out. Cruz Daddario would enter the game and strike out Jacob Sniffin to end the inning.
CSUN stranded the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth but Doremus would come through an inning later. In the seventh, Barret reached on an infield single and both Ruiz and Sean Skelly worked walks to load the bases. Doremus hammered a ball the opposite way and well over the left field wall for a grand slam to give CSUN a 6-3 lead.
The Matador bullpen would hold down Hawai'i the rest of the way as Blake Schriever retired all six batters he faced consecutively to pick up his eighth save of the season.
