#8 UCSB Outslugs CSUN in Series Opener
5/3/2019 6:44:00 PM | Baseball
CSUN stroked four home runs in the game but the Gauchos powered their way to a series-opening win behind 10 extra base hits including six home runs.
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Matadors jumped out in front in the early going with a first-inning run. Andrew Lucas worked a leadoff walk and Jose Ruiz poked a one-out single to right field to put runners at the corners. After UCSB starter Ben Brecht forced Sean Skelly to popup a bunt, Brandon Bohning came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to left to put CSUN ahead 1-0.
Wesley Moore held the Gauchos without a hit through the first two innings but UCSB's bats came alive in the third inning behind five extra base hits. McClain O'Connor and Thomas Rowan each hit two-run home runs in the frame while Andrew Martinez and Cole Mueller stroked RBI doubles to quickly put CSUN in a 6-1 hole.
In the fifth, the Matadors got a run back in exciting fashion as Clarke would drive a shot to center field. On the play, center fielder Tommy Jew ran to the wall, leaped and appeared to have the ball in his glove. However, Jew crashed into the wall and could not come away with the catch. Clarke never stopped running on the base paths and made it all the way around for the inside the park homer.
UCSB kept up the hitting barrage over the next two innings, scoring seven runs over the span to blow the game wide open. In the sixth, a costly error at third base with two outs would eventually lead to a pair of home runs from Eric Yang and Rowan. Three more runs came across in the seventh, highlighted by an RBI single from Kyle Johnson that put CSUN 11 runs behind.
The Matadors continued to show fight in the late innings, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 13-6. Lucas roped a one-out double in the frame before Ruiz belted a two-run home run. Bohning followed suit with another two-run shot to left field after Sean Skelly walked.
The home run show continued in the eighth as Armani Smith connected for a two-run home run to push the UCSB lead to 15-6. CSUN would respond with a long drive from Denzel Clarke in the bottom of the eighth that cleared left-center wall.
Tevin Mitchell added to the home run tally with a drive in the top of the ninth that gave the Gauchos a nine-run lead. Robert Bullard picked up a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth but the Gauchos held the Matadors off the scoreboard to seal the win.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"I thought we played well in three of the four facets [of the game] that we break down in the dugout. We just didn't pitch the ball well like we're capable of. I think there are a lot of positives [from today's game]. We played good defense and we swung the bats really well. I liked how our guys came off the bench. That's a reflection that your bench is working and ready to play."
GAME NOTES
Clarke's inside the park home run is the first by a Matador in this century. The freshman's three hits and two home runs in the game are career highs.
Bohning collected his 16th multiple-hit game of the season, which ties Kyle Barret for the team lead. In addition, Bohning recorded his team-best eighth multiple-RBI game.
For UCSB, O'Connor finished 3-for-6 with two RBI while Rowan picked up three RBI, three runs scored and two home runs.
