Matadors Lose Slugfest to Cal State Fullerton, 13-10
5/24/2019 5:44:00 PM | Baseball
In a game with a total of 23 runs, 30 hits and 15 pitchers seeing action, the Matadors scored six runs in the eighth inning to take a three-run lead only to see the Titans rally for six of their own in the top of the ninth as the weekend series evened at one apiece.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Barrett kicked off the bottom of the first with a bang as he launched a 2-0 pitch way over the left field wall for a leadoff home run. CSUN would add another run on a timely two-out hit to take a 2-0 lead. After Sean Skelly walked and Blake Doremus singled, Wesley Ghan-Gibson stroked a two-out single to left field to plate Skelly from second base.
Sodersten tip-toed out of danger in the second inning, leaving two runners on base but the Titans would push across single tallies over the next three innings. In the third, Mitchell Berryhill singled to start the inning before stealing second base, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on an Isaiah Garcia RBI single. An Inning later, Zach Lew blasted a solo home run to left field to even the game at 2-2.
Fullerton took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth behind a one-out RBI double from Garcia. Sodersten would rebound by striking out the next two batters to keep the Matadors within a run, leaving Garcia at second base.
The lead though was shortlived for the Titans as the Matadors scored two of their own in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead. After a leadoff hit, Barret eventually reached third base with one out for Skelly who hit a soft grounder down the third base line that Lew could not handle. The tying run came in on the Skelly single and CSUN later added a second run when Lucas roped an RBI single to left field.
Sodersten pitched perhaps his best inning of the game in the sixth when he threw a nine-pitch frame, keeping the Matadors ahead for the moment. Fullerton was far from done though as Brett Borgogno took Sodersten deep to left field for a game-tying home run in the seventh inning. CSUN would need to use three pitchers, Wesley Moore, Blaine Traxel and Blake Schriever, to work out of the seventh inning.
With the game tied 4-4 in the eighth, both offenses came alive in a hitting barrage to close the game.
In the Titan eighth, the first two batters reached base against Schriever before Lew homered for the second time to put the Titans ahead 7-4. Cassius Hamm put out the fire for the moment by retiring the next three batters, giving the CSUN offense a chance to respond.
The Matadors would indeed respond in the bottom of the eighth, plating six runs as 11 batters came to the plate. After the first two batters reached to start the inning, a failed pickoff attempt from Titus Groeneweg, allowed Lucas to score. Austin Elder would walk before Denzel Clarke belted a RBI double to cut the lead to one. Moments later, Barret hammered a double over the center fielder Berryhill's head to put the Matadors ahead by a run again. CSUN eventually loaded the bases for Lucas who hit a two-run double, giving CSUN a 10-7 lead.
Cal State Fullerton answered back yet again in the top of the ninth with a six-run outburst for the fifth lead change of the game. Following a Garcia flyout to start the inning, the next five batters reached base, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jacob Pavletich. Hank LoForte added two more runs for good measure with a double that brought in Berryhill and Lew.
CSUN would get the tying run to the on-deck circle in the bottom of the ninth but Fullerton reliever Dillon Brown recorded the final out on a Barret fielder's choice.
GAME NOTES
Barret tallied his team-best 21st multiple-hit game on Friday while Ghan-Gibson and Clarke also had two-hit efforts. Skelly stretched his on-base streak to 14 consecutive games as he reached base four times on the day. Sodersten tied a career-high with six innings pitched while his strikeout total fell one short of his personal-best eight he set against UC Riverside (4/7/19).
For Fullerton, Lew drove in four runs to go with two home runs while Pavletich finished with three RBI.
