Two-run Eighth Lifts CBU Past CSUN, 4-3
5/7/2019 6:19:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (19-27) let a late lead slip away as California Baptist rallied past the Matadors for a 4-3 decision on Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field. Junior Blake Doremus supplied the power with a three-run home run in the fourth inning while freshman Denzel Clarke finished 2-for-3 with a double and triple. Out of the bullpen, senior Theron Kay tossed 4.0 shutout innings, striking out four batters.
CSUN led 3-2 entering the top of the eighth but the Lancers would score two runs in the frame and hold off the Matadors for the one-run victory.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Making his first appearance since April 2, senior Cassius Hamm returned to the mound on Tuesday and worked three innings. Hamm retired the side in order in the first inning before the Lancers struck for two runs in the top of the second. Nick Plaia collected an RBI groundout in the inning while Harrison Spohn roped an RBI double to put CSUN in an early 2-0 hole.
Hamm got back on track with a quick eight-pitch third inning to give the Matador offense a chance to come back.
CSUN was held hitless through the first two innings before Clarke hit a one-out double in the third. The Matadors eventually broke through in the fourth with a big hit from its left fielder. Sean Skelly worked a one-out walk in the fourth inning before advancing to second base on a wild pitch. Kyle Barret followed with a bunt single down the third base line to put runners at the corners for Doremus. The left-handed slugger would drive a 1-0 pitch the other way and over the left field wall for a three-run shot.
Kay relieved Hamm in the fourth and gave the Matadors a big lift over the next four innings. The right hander sat down three-straight batters in the fourth before receiving a timely double play in the fifth. After Plaia reached on an infield single in the fifth, Kay induced a 4-3 double play as second baseman Damiano Palmegiani was positioned perfectly behind second base to make the play.
Kay again faced the minimum in the sixth but the Lancers picked up a leadoff single from John Glenn to leadoff the seventh. Ryan Mota was retired for the first out of the inning before Skelly made a strong throw from behind the plate to second to catch Glenn attempting to steal the base. Kay would then strike out Rory Smith to end the seventh.
After holding the Lancers off the scoreboard for five consecutive innings, the Matadors issued three walks in the eighth that would lead to two CBU runs coming across. Spohn began the rally with a one-out walk before Billy Rockefeller legged out an infield single. Moments later, Cruz Daddario issued a four-pitch walk to Luke Navigato to load the bases with one out. Michael Cartwright entered out of the bullpen but surrendered a seven-pitch walk to Chad Castillo force in the tying run. Pinch-hitter Damon Keith then came through with a sacrifice fly to put CBU ahead 4-3.
On the offensive side, the Matador bats produced just one hit after the fourth inning. Clarke would collect the one hit, a leadoff triple, in the fifth inning but he was stranded at third base after three-straight Matadors were retired. Five CBU relievers combined to limit CSUN to two base runners over the final 5.2 innings.
Matt Amrhein gave the Lancers strong work out the bullpen with 2.2 shutouts innings of work. Amrhein retired Barret to begin the ninth before Mason McCarvey and Matt Mogollon teamed up to record the final two outs to secure a Lancer victory.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"We gave too many at bats away in the eighth inning and didn't throw strikes with the fastball. [Offensively] we gave too many pitches away.
Cassius fought to get out there and he fought to stay out there. He's pitching injured in essence. He wants to be out there and help his team. You have to give a guy a lot of credit for going through the therapy sessions in the training room and also fight to be on the field no matter what his arm feels like."
GAME NOTES
Barret finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and extended his hitting streak to eight-straight games. Freshman right hander Blaine Traxel retired all five batters he faced in the game and racked up three strikeouts.Â
For CBU, Glenn went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Amrhein retired all eight batters he faced to collect the win.
