Matadors Open Final Road Trip at UC Davis on Friday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (19-27, 6-12 BWC) returns to Big West action this weekend when the Matadors visit UC Davis. The series begins Friday at 2:30 p.m. and continues Saturday and Sunday with start times set for 1 p.m. each day. All three games will stream live on BigWest.TV.

Following the series with the Aggies, the Matadors conclude the road portion of their schedule with a three-game set at San Francisco next weekend (May 17-19). The 2019 regular season campaign will conclude the weekend of May 23-25 as the Matadors host Cal State Fullerton.
CSUN dropped a tough 4-3 decision to California Baptist last Tuesday at Matador Field. The Matadors took a 3-2 lead to the top of the eighth inning before the Lancers rallied for two runs. CBU's bullpen would hold off CSUN over the final two frames to split the season series at 1-1. Junior Blake Doremus powered the offense with a three-run home run in the fourth inning, which at the time erased a 2-0 deficit. Senior right hander Theron Kay gave the Matadors a lift out of the bullpen with four shutout innings, scattering two hits.
Senior left-handed pitcher Isaiah Nunez leads the rotation against the Aggies on Friday. Nunez comes in with a 7-4 record and 2.92 ERA but in Big West play, the left hander has amassed a 2.21 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 36.2 innings of work. With a win over UC Davis, Nunez will become the first Matador pitcher to win eight games in a season since 2002. Freshman right hander Blake Sodersten (1-2) is sporting a 4.01 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 49.1 innings on the year. Sodersten will make his first Saturday start of the season as he looks to improve his 3.42 ERA in Big West play. Wrapping up the series, sophomore left hander Wesley Moore has a 4-4 record and 4.30 ERA. Moore is eighth in the Big West in strikeouts (57) and ninth in innings pitched (67.0).
As a team, the Matadors are second in the Big West in home runs (46), extra base hits (125) and walks (189) while they are third in triples (11), total bases (619), stolen bases (52), slugging percentage (.404) and strikeouts (320). The CSUN pitching staff is also third in the conference in earned run average (4.34).
Individually, senior second baseman Kyle Barret is second in the Big West in doubles (16), fifth in hits (57), seventh in batting average (.337) and extra base hits (21) and eighth in total bases (86). Fellow middle infielder, sophomore shortstop Brandon Bohning is tied for fourth in the league in stolen bases (13) and seventh in home runs (7). Right behind Bohning, junior catcher Sean Skelly is tied for eighth with six home runs. On the pitching side, freshman right hander Blaine Traxel is second in the conference in appearances (26) while sophomore right hander Blake Schriever is fourth (24). Nunez is second in wins, fourth in innings pitched (74.0) and ninth in ERA (2.92).
Dating back to 1990, UC Davis leads the all-time series with CSUN 25-18. The Matadors though have controlled the series in recent years, winning 13 of the past 19 meetings. CSUN is 9-6 against the Aggies under head coach Greg Moore including sweeping a three-game series last season at Matador Field. Two seasons ago, the Matadors dropped two of three games at Dobbins Stadium. In seven all-time series in Davis, the Matadors have won only one series (2013).
A Closer Look at UC Davis
The Aggies are 17-24 this season and 8-10 in Big West play. UC Davis is coming off its first-ever series win over Cal State Fullerton last weekend, capped off by a 3-2 comeback win in the rubber game. The Aggies are 12-8 at Dobbins Stadium and have collected series wins over UC Riverside and Long Beach State in league play. The team ranks second in the Big West in doubles (73) and stolen bases (69). Head coach Matt Vaughn is in his eighth season at the helm of the UC Davis.
Sophomore infielder Tanner Murray is second in the Big West in hits (61) and batting average (.386) while he also leads the team in runs (29), doubles (15), slugging percentage (.513) and on-base percentage (.441). Fellow sophomore Alejandro Lara has driven in a team-high 26 runs to go with a .310 batting average and 26 runs scored. Senior outfielder Garret Kelly leads the team in home runs with six. Starting Friday, sophomore right hander Brett Erwin sports a team-best 3.34 ERA and 59.1 innings to go with his 5-3 record and 26 strikeouts.
