CSUN's Offense Explodes in 4-0 Win Over Southern Utah
8/24/2019 11:27:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LAS VEGAS, Nev.---CSUN Women's Soccer scored four goals in the second half to defeat Southern Utah 4-0 on Saturday evening at Peter Johann Field to improve to 2-0 on the season. Sophomore Alexis White netted her second goal in as many matches while juniors Sydney Gilbert and Bethany Fitzsimmons and freshman Stephanie Gallardo all picked up their first goals of the season. In front of the net, sophomore Taylor Thames made one save en route to recording her second-straight shutout. The Matadors' 2-0 start to the season is the program's first since 2012.
In an offensive barrage, CSUN posted a sizeable 22-3 advantage in shots for the night including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Matadors also earned eight corner kicks while the Thunderbirds had none.
FIRST HALF
The Matadors came out firing at the outset, recording the match's first five shots in the first 16 minutes of the contest. Both Fitzsimmons and Cindy Arteaga each put shots on goal during the stretch. CSUN would outshoot Southern Utah 11-3 in the period including putting three shots on frame. Izabel Reyes forced Brianna Aldridge to make a save in the 41st minute, which kept the match scoreless.
SECOND HALF
Despite controlling the ball for most of the first period, the Matadors entered the second half still without a goal. That would change though very quickly as CSUN struck with back-to-back scores in the first five minutes of the second period. Amber Edemann would find Gilbert on the right side for the first goal of the match in the 49th minute. Just 1:16 later, the Matadors doubled their lead after a header from White off a feed from Gabriella Hinojosa.
However, CSUN was far from done in the second half. Fitzsimmons would miss just wide of the net in the 66th minute before flipping the script a minute later. Off a set piece, Kassandra Matthews found a streaking Fitzsimmons who headed in the Matadors' third goal of the night. Continuing to apply the pressure, the Matadors struck again in the 81st minute as Gallardo made a dazzling drive up the middle and past several defenders before finishing six yards out.
The Thunderbirds were held without a shot for the entire second half behind stellar Matador defense. Gabriela Robles saw the most minutes on the backline with 74 while Amanda Martin logged 69.
GAME NOTES
Both Edemann and Matthews recorded their first career points with assists in the win. Gallardo has now registered three points in her first two career matches as she also picked up an assist in Thursday win over UNLV. CSUN has recorded two-straight shutouts to begin a season for the first time since the 2012 campaign.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"Today's win says a lot about our young team. They are playing like they're supposed to be here. Today, we had a flat warm-up, so I had to remind them about the importance of finishing out the weekend after a win on Thursday. This was a big win for us. Our team is playing with so much heart and everyone is playing for each other. It's such a fun group to be around."
UP NEXT
The Matadors continue their road swing with a trip to Texas next weekend. CSUN visits nationally-ranked Texas A&M on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. before taking on Houston on Sunday at 5 p.m.
