Matadors Defeated at #16 Texas A&M
8/30/2019 10:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
COLLEGE, STATION, Texas---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-1) tasted defeat for the first time this season as No. 16 Texas A&M prevailed 4-0 on Friday evening at Ellis Field. Junior Sydney Gilbert registered two of the team's five shots on the night. In goal, two Matadors saw action on the field with sophomore Taylor Thames registering six saves and one goal allowed.
The Aggies finished with 22 shots including 13 on goal while the Matadors were unsuccessful in putting a shot on frame. Texas A&M also produced more corner kicks at 13 compared to CSUN's two. Three Aggies hit the back of the net with Taylor Ziemer recording a brace.
FIRST HALF
Playing one of the top teams in the nation, the Matadors would be tested in the early going. Goalkeeper Amanda Delgado made her first save in the third minute of play off the foot of Grace Piper. Minutes later, the Matadors were whistled for an offside, giving the ball back to the Aggies. Texas A&M would take control from there as Macie Kolb hit the back of the net via passes from Ally Watt and Piper in the 11th minute.
Less than a minute later, the Aggies struck again when Delgado tried to break up a play at the top of the box. A diving slide would be unsuccessful in giving the Matadors possession as Taylor Ziemer hit a chip shot into an open net from 20 yards out. Gilbert produced the Matadors' first shot in the 13th minute before Texas A&M went back on its offensive attack. After dodging several Aggie attacks, the Matadors fell behind 3-0 after a header from Jimena Lopez struck the netting. CSUN picked up a pair of shots from Kacie Garrity and Stephanie Gallardo down the stretch but went into halftime trailing by three.
SECOND HALF
Thames came into the match at the start of the second period and helped fend off the Aggie attack. She stopped a pair of shots in the first 11 minutes of play and stuffed another in the 67th minute. The Aggies though finally broke through minutes later in transition. Playing the ball up the left side of the field, Rheagan Smith delivered a cross to the center of the box where Katie Smith set up Ziermer for a left-footed score at the right post.
The Matadors would keep battling down the stretch but would be held off the scoreboard for the first time this season. Gilbert provided the Matadors' last shot of the night, which was blocked away in the 78th minute.
GAME NOTES
Delgado made her season debut in the match after missing the team's first two matches due to injury. She finished with three saves in 45 minutes of action. Sophomore Briana Rios also made her season debut off the bench and played 11 minutes.
UP NEXT
The Matadors conclude a four-match road trip on Sunday evening against Houston. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. PDT.
