Off to its best start since 2012, CSUN handed UNLV a 1-0 defeat last Thursday to kick off the season before downing Southern Utah 4-0 in a neutral-site match on Saturday evening. The team has not begun the season with two-straight shutouts since the 2012 campaign.
Sophomore Alexis White would have a weekend to remember, scoring once in each victory. White scored the eventual game-winner against UNLV off a flick pass from freshman Stephanie Gallardo in the first half. Sophomore Taylor Thames registered three saves in the match to also notch her first career shutout.
Two nights later, the Matadors' scored their most goals since 2016 in a 4-0 rout of SUU. After a scoreless half, the Matadors broke through in a big way in the first five minutes of the second period. Sophomore Sydney Gilbert and White scored to put CSUN up by a pair. Junior Bethany Fitzsimmons would head in the Matadors' third goal in the 67th minute then Gallardo notched her first career goal late in the match. The trio of senior Amber Edemann, junior Gabriella Hinojosa and sophomore Kassandra Matthews also picked up their first career assists and points in the triumph.
After posting two-straight shutouts, Thames collected Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday. She finished with four saves in 180 minutes in between the pipes last weekend. Thames made the spot start in the opener after sophomore Amanda Delgado went down with an injury earlier in the week. Prior to the two starts, Thames had only started the Matadors' first four matches in 2018.
Nine Matadors made their CSUN debuts including eight making their first collegiate appearances in Las Vegas. True freshmen Cindy Arteaga and Kacie Garrity started both matches while redshirt freshman Kimberly Anderson started against Southern Utah. Off the bench, true freshmen Izabel Reyes, Kiley Voss and Gallardo, and redshirt freshmen Cora Willcot and Ify Mbeledogu also made their collegiate debuts while sophomore Jacqueline Villanueva played her first two matches with CSUN.
Of the 20 Matadors that have competed this season, just six are upperclassmen including the team's only two seniors, defenders Amanda Martin and Amber Edemann. This season's roster consists of 15 returning letterwinners on the active roster with eight of those players being underclassmen.
CSUN has played Texas A&M just once before in team history with the Aggies picking up a 5-0 victory in 2010 at home. On the flip side, the Matadors are 2-0 against Houston in team history with both of those matches taking place in Northridge. CSUN handed the Cougars a 2-1 defeat in 2013 and most recently a 2-0 decision in 2017.
