Matadors Rally to Earn Draw with CSUB
9/13/2019 9:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (4-1-2) battled CSU Bakersfield to a 1-1 draw on Friday evening at Matador Soccer Field. An own goal from less than six yards out gave the Matadors the equalizer in the 33rd minute. Sophomore Amanda Delgado collected five saves in between the pipes to earn the hard-fought draw.
The Roadrunners led in the shot department 12-7 and held a narrow edge in shots on goal at 6-5. CSUN registered a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. A total of 17 fouls were committed in the contest with the Matadors whistled for 10. Sophomore Ashley Cruz was shown the yellow card in the 37th minute of play. CSUN was also credited for holding possession for 54 percent of the match.
FIRST HALF
The action picked up quickly at kickoff with the Roadrunners gaining the early possession. After earning a corner kick in the fourth minute, Jordan Martinez kicked the ball into a crowd about six yards from the goal. Delgado attempted a two-handed grab but she lost her balance and possession of the ball. A CSUN defender tried to kick the ball away but instead the ball bounced into the netting, giving CSUB a 1-0 edge. Delgado was tested in the 18th minute when Aryana Harvey kicked the ball off the crossbar. The ball would land back into play where Chelsea Duran sent a low right shot toward the goal but Delgado made a diving save to her left.
CSUN would be held to one shot for most of the half before getting a lift from its reserves near intermission. Moments after a CSUN corner kick, Stephanie Gallardo delivered a cross into a scrum deep in the box. With Alexis White charging toward the net, a Roadrunner defender headed the ball into the goal resulting in the equalizer. Cora Willcot earned a late shot on goal in the final minute of the half but the score remained 1-1.
SECOND HALF
After the Roadrunners outshot the Matadors 8-2 in the first half, CSUN would hold a 4-2 edge in shots in the second half. Bringing energy off the bench, Kiley Voss and Gallardo put shots on goal early in the half before Amya LawsonKitchen just missed wide of the net in the 71st minute.
Delgado made another save moments later off a shot from Giselle Michel as the teams traded blows down the stretch. CSUN earned a pair of corner kicks near the 80th minute leading to a shot from Izabel Reyes that was saved by Andrea Neves. Neither side could hit the go-ahead goal as the match entered overtime.
OVERTIME
Delgado added to her save total with stops in the 94th and 107th minutes of play to keep the match squared. Early in the second overtime session, Arteaga nearly put the game away with a shot from the right of the box but her shot missed the left post by inches.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"I thought the first 30 minutes could be forgotten but the next 80 minutes we played hard and did what we do. As a coaching staff we talked about it at halftime and [our reserves] were hot. As a team, you play the ones that are hot. It's one game and it's not a determining factor of who is going to start the next game but they were hot tonight. I felt that the group came on and did an unbelievable job. In the first six games, five of those games our subs have picked up the level of play and I think that's why our team is having success this year. I'm really proud of the group."
GAME NOTES
On the backline, Amanda Martin and Kacie Garrity played the full 110 minutes for the Matadors. Off the bench, Voss logged a team-high 81 minutes in the midfield. Cruz made her Matador debut in the contest and finished with 12 minutes played.
