FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (4-1-1) continues its longest homestand of the season this week. The Matadors host CSU Bakersfield on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on San Diego on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for both matches. Sunday's contest is the first of a CSUN soccer doubleheader with the men's soccer team hosting UCLA in the nightcap at 6 p.m.
Last weekend, the Matadors stretched their unbeaten streak to three-straight matches and their shutout total to four on the season. CSUN played to a scoreless draw with Kansas State on Friday night and posted a 1-0 win on Sunday against Eastern Washington. Sophomore Amanda Delgado earned her first two shutouts of the season after playing all 200 minutes in net. On the offensive side, junior Bethany Fitzsimmons scored her third career game-winner on Sunday with a penalty kick in the third minute against the Eagles.
On defense, senior Amanda Martin helped anchor the backline in the two shutouts. Martin played the full 200 minutes over the weekend while senior Amber Edemann, sophomore Gabriela Robles and freshman Kacie Garrity also logged heavy minutes in the two matches.
Delgado's work in goal would be rewarded with her second career Big West Defensive Player of the Week award on Sept. 9. She recorded a season-high six saves against K-State including making three stops in the two overtime periods. Delgado added two more saves, both of which in the second half, in the win over Eastern Washington. With Delgado's honor, two Matador goalkeepers have been named Big West Defensive Player of the Week already this season as Taylor Thames earned the award on Aug. 26. In the Big West record book, Delgado and Thames are the first goalkeeper duo to earn the award in the same season since 2010.
The Matadors have recorded four shutouts through their first six matches for the first time since the 2016 campaign. That season CSUN registered shutouts in seven of its first nine matches. It has also been four seasons since the Matadors have won four times through their first six contests.
CSUN comes into the week atop the Big West standings. The team leads the league in goals-against-average (0.80) and shutouts while it is ranked second in goals with eight. Sophomore Alexis White is tied for second in the conference with three goals and Fitzsimmons is ranked in fourth place with her two strikes. Both Thames and Delgado are tied for the conference lead in wins (2) and shutouts (2) while Thames still leads the Big West in GAA (0.40).
The Matadors are 5-1 all-time against CSU Bakersfield and have won the last three in the series. CSUN handed the Roadrunners a 2-0 defeat in Bakersfield last season with Fitzsimmons recording the game-winning goal. Friday will be CSUB's first trip to Matador Soccer Field since 2011 when the Matadors notched a 3-0 win.
San Diego leads the all-time series with the Matadors 11-3-1. The Toreros posted a 2-0 win at CSUN in the teams' last meeting in 2017. CSUN is looking to snap a three-match winless streak in the series and record its first win since topping San Diego 2-0 in 2014.
