Martin's PK Lifts CSUN Past San Diego, 1-0

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (5-1-2) notched its fifth shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Senior defender Amanda Martin scored her first career goal in the 66th minute via a penalty kick while sophomore Amanda Delgado tallied four saves to record her third clean sheet in goal.
The Matadors narrowly outshot the Toreros 8-7 in the contest but San Diego finished with a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. In corner kicks, USD had six while CSUN tallied four. Eight total fouls were called on Sunday with CSUN whistled for five of them.
FIRST HALF
The teams traded shots in a mostly even first half as each squad registered five attempts apiece. Delgado picked up two saves over a two minute-span off attempts from Milan Moses and Madison Louderback. After a missed shot from Michaela Foster, the CSUN defense blocked away an attempt from Halle Walls.
The Matador offense picked up late in the half, gaining the possession and several looks at the net. Alexis White nearly took the ball from behind the midfield toward the top of the box before missing wide of the net. White would have another shot blocked minutes later and Ashley Cruz missed wide just before the end of the half.
SECOND HALF
After a scoreless 45 minutes, CSUN pressured the Torero defense in the early going resulting in a pair of offside calls. The Toreros' most dangerous attack came off a corner kick when Eden Quiroz headed the ball from inside 10 yards but Delgado made a two-handed save.
The tide changed in the 66th minute as Walls was whistled for fouling Cindy Arteaga just inside the 18-yard line. Martin took the penalty kick and calmly hit the right corner of netting to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. CSUN's defense would take over down the stretch of the second half, only allowing one shot over the final 26 minutes. Louderback took the Toreros' final shot but missed wide right in the 84th minute. The Matadors controlled the clock in the final moments of the match to secure the win.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"I felt like we stuck to the game plan. When we stayed disciplined, we were excellent. I felt like when we got a little tired and little undisciplined, it was easier for [San Diego]. I wasn't going to let anybody else step to the plate [to take the penalty kick]. I called on our senior captain (Martin) who has been here five years. She's driving this group right now. If we're going to win, we're going to win with her."
"I've coached a number of unbelievable teams with great energy that were conference champs or Big West Tournament champs. This group has that type of energy and that's what I'm most excited about. There's a youthfulness to them. The closeness and togetherness they have is fun to be around."
GAME NOTES
CSUN is now 2-for-2 in penalty kicks this season with Bethany Fitzsimmons scoring the team's other one on Sept. 8. After an undefeated homestand, CSUN is now unbeaten over its last five matches.
UP NEXT
The Matadors hit the road next weekend for a pair of matches in Arizona. CSUN visits Arizona State on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. before taking on Grand Canyon on Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday's match will air live on the Pac-12 Network.
