FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (5-1-2) completes the road portion of its non-conference schedule this weekend when the Matadors visit Arizona State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Grand Canyon on Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday's match will broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network while the WAC Digital Network will stream Sunday's match.
The Matadors concluded an unbeaten homestand last weekend as CSUN played to a 1-1 draw against CSU Bakersfield last Friday before handing San Diego a 1-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon. The two decisions stretched the Matadors unbeaten streak to five-straight matches including four in a row at home.
CSUN surrendered an own goal to CSU Bakersfield in the fifth minute of play but rallied for the equalizer before halftime. After a cross into the box, a Roadrunner own goal tied the match in the 33rd minute. Sophomore Amanda Delgado made five saves to help ensure a draw.
The Matadors and Toreros were scoreless until the 66th minute before a foul inside USD's box gave the Matadors a penalty kick opportunity. Senior Amanda Martin would drill her first career goal on the penalty kick and CSUN held on again in the final minutes to post its fifth shutout in eight contests.
CSUN received three votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. It is the first time the Matadors have received votes in any weekly poll since the 2012 season. In terms of win percentage, the Matadors' .750 percentage is their best through the first eight games of a season since 2015 when the team went 6-2 to start the year. Currently, the Matadors lead the Big West standings and top the league in goals-against-average (0.71) and shutouts (5).
Heading into the week, Delgado leads the Big West in wins (3) and shutouts (3) while she ranks second in GAA (0.84) and fifth in saves (22). On the offensive end, sophomore Alexis White is tied for second in goals with three while junior Bethany Fitzsimmons ranks eighth with two goals. In points, White is tied for sixth place with six points.
Arizona State leads the all-time series with CSUN 4-1-0 and has won the last two meetings, which took place in 2013 and 2014 (both 2-0 decisions). The Matadors' only victory over the Sun Devils occurred in 2012 when they registered a 1-0 win to open the season. CSUN seeks its first win over a Pac-12 team since beating Oregon State in 2013. In addition, the Matadors are looking for their second-ever win on the road against a Pac-12 opponent (Oregon, 1999).
CSUN is 1-1-0 in the head-to-head series with Grand Canyon. The teams played for the first time in 20 seasons in 2017 as CSUN prevailed 1-0 at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors are making their first-ever trip to GCU on Sunday.
