9/20/2019 9:26:00 PM | Women's Soccer
TEMPE, Ariz.---CSUN Women's Soccer (5-1-3) played to a 1-1 tie with Arizona State on Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Freshman Kacie Garrity notched her first career goal in the second half to give the Matadors at the time a one-goal advantage. In net, sophomore Amanda Delgado recorded five saves in the contest. Playing the fifth-best scoring offense in the nation, the Matadors held the Sun Devils to one goal in 110 minutes of hard-fought soccer.
With tonight's result, the Matadors are unbeaten in their last six matches.
Â
ASU outshot CSUN 22-7 in the contest and finished with a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Matadors earned five corner kicks while the Sun Devils finished with three. A total of 27 fouls were called in the match with the Matadors whistled for 21 of them. Gabriela Robles saw the yellow card in the 56th minute.
Â
FIRST HALF
The high-powered Sun Devil offense came out fast in the early going, recording four shots in the first 14 minutes. Delgado would record three saves over that span including an acrobatic stop where she dove to her left to tip away a laser from Marleen Schimmer. In the half, Delgado made four saves but the Sun Devils would be held without a shot for the final 22 minutes. Cindy Arteaga and Amber Edemann each collected a shot for the Matadors in the opening 45 minutes.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors flipped the script by becoming the aggressors after intermission. After a pair of corner kicks and a foul by Arizona State, the Matadors struck for the game's first goal. Off a run from the left side, Garrity took the ball deep into ASU's part of the field where she found room from the left corner of the box. She deposited a high-arching shot that sailed over the outstretched hands of Giulia Cascapera and into the right corner of the net.
Minutes later, the Matadors would have two quality looks to double their lead. Alexis White missed wide of the net from inside the box and Cindy Arteaga fired a bullet from 20 yards that was saved by Cascapera. The score remained 1-0 until a costly foul by Robles inside the Matador box resulted in a penalty kick. Nicole Douglas took the shot and came through with the equalizer to even the match with 15 minutes in regulation. CSUN's defense blocked away a pair of late shots and staved off an attack from Schimmer in the 88th minute to keep the game squared at 1-1.
OVERTIME
The Sun Devils went on the attack in the two extra periods, coming away with seven shots including one on frame. In the 93rd minute, Delgado made her fifth save of the match with a terrific dive to her right off a shot from Douglas on top of the box. Alexia Delgado took a pair of late shots near the end of the second overtime session but both went wide.
GAME NOTES
Garrity is the seventh Matador to score a goal and the fifth to notch her first career strike this season. The foursome of Amanda Martin, Amber Edemann, Garrity and Robles played the full 110 minutes on the backline while Sydney Gilbert logged a heavy 91 minutes in the midfield.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"Tonight's draw is a testament to our character and the type of people on the team. I'm so proud of the group for sticking together and to the game plan. We're going on the road against a Pac-12 school who beat two Big West teams already this season – I told the group to have the courage to fail and to get after it and they did. The whole team played phenomenal today and we defended the ball with everything we had. We battled tonight and it says a lot about our team to come on the road and earn a draw against a great team like Arizona State."
