PHOENIX, Ariz. - Sophomore Seyvion Waggoner pounded a match-high 13 kills while Nicole Nevarez added 11 as the CSUN Matadors won their season-high third straight match, sweeping Grand Canyon in the opening match of the Grand Canyon Classic Friday evening at Antelope Gymnasium.
With the 26-24, 25-22, 25-23 victory, the Matadors improve to 4-6 on the season while the Lopes see their five-match winning streak snapped in dropping to 8-2.Â
KEY STATISTICS
• Waggoner, who hit a season-high .458 against Morgan State last week, committed a single hitting error on 28 swings while connecting at a .429 clip against GCU.
• Nevarez added 11 kills on 38 attacks (.211) to go with seven digs while freshman Taylor Orshoff chipped in six kills (.115), a season-high four blocks and three digs.
• Senior setter Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker handed out 30 assists while also posting two kills, five digs and three blocks. Junior libero Makayla Bradford had a team-high 21 digs while also serving two of CSUN's four aces.Â
• The Matadors hit .220 (38-10-127) as a team while limiting a hot-hitting Grand Canyon team to a season-low .072 (38-28-139) team hitting clip. Each team had 38 kills but GCU committed 18 more hitting errors than CSUN.
• Annabelle Kubinski led the Lopes with nine kills (.190) while libero Teagan DeFalco had a match-high 28 digs in the loss.
COACH JEFF STORK SAID
"We neutralized a number of their hitters, 11 total blocks in three sets is great. Overall, just a great match for us and collectively probably our best win of the season. The thing I'm most pleased about is our sideout percentage stayed high throughout the match. We hope to repeat the effort with two tough matches tomorrow."
SET 1
The Matadors held a series of three-point leads early on, as a Nevarez kill gave CSUN a 7-4 cushion. A 5-2 run by the hosts evened the score at 9-9 before the Lopes extended the run to 8-3 to take a 12-10 lead. A Kaira Moss kill forced a Matador timeout at 15-12 before GCU opened up its largest lead of the set at 17-13. A co-block by Orshoff and Lauryn Anderson on the next point fueled a 6-0 CSUNÂ run that put the Matadors back in front 19-17. With CSUN holding a 20-18 lead, a Lopes hitting error matched the Matadors' largest lead of the set at 21-18. But three straight points by the Lopes forced a CSUN timeout at 21-21 before a GCU service error ended the run. The score was still tied at 23-all when a Lopes hitting error gave the Matadors their first set point. GCU saved one set point on a Matador service error before a Makekau-Whittaker kill followed by a Bradford ace sealed the 26-24 win.Â
SET 2
The two teams battled to an early 5-5 tie when the Lopes outscored CSUN 4-1 to take a 9-6 lead. A Kubinski kill gave the hosts a 14-9 lead forcing the Matadors to spend their first timeout. GCU pushed its lead to as many as six points on four occasions, the last at 18-12 when CSUN mounted a rally. A kill by Nevarez propelled the Matadors on a 5-1 run that forced a Lopes timeout at 19-17. GCU wouldn't surrender the lead until a pair of Orshoff kills and another Bradford ace erased a 22-20 Lopes lead. The Matadors then closed the set with two more points to take a 25-22 win.
 Â
SET 3
The Matadors played from behind in the final set after Grand Canyon jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Lopes still led by three (6-3) when a 4-1 run, capped by a Caroline Page ace, tied things at 7-7. An ensuing 3-1 run by GCU gave the hosts a 10-8 lead when kills from Waggoner and Nevarez was followed by a GCU hitting error gave CSUN its first lead at 11-10. Another Waggoner kill gave the Matadors their largest lead to that point at 14-11 and CSUN maintained a three-point edge (15-12) following a Lopes service error. GCU then put together a 6-2 run to re-take the lead 18-17 while forcing a Matador timeout. The break proved pivotal for CSUN as a co-block by Anderson and Waggoner followed by a pair of Lopes hitting errors gave the Matadors the lead for good at 20-18. CSUN then held off a late GCU run as Waggoner's kill at 24-23 sealed the 3-0 sweep.Â
