CSUN Downs Eastern Washington, 1-0

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Junior Bethany Fitzsimmons netted a penalty kick that proved to be the difference in CSUN Women's Soccer's 1-0 win over Eastern Washington on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Sophomore Amanda Delgado recorded two saves en route to collecting her second clean sheet in three days. The Matadors have now recorded four shutouts through the first six matches for the first time since 2016.
CSUN outshot Eastern Washington 10-7 and finished with a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. The Eagles though earned seven corner kicks to the Matadors' one. A total of 29 fouls were called in the match with CSUN whistled for 20 of them. Kassandra Matthews was shown the yellow card in the 70th minute of action.
FIRST HALF
The action started quickly in the opening minutes of the match. The Matadors went on the attack near the left wing as Cindy Arteaga drove into the box before being tripped up by Grace Klinkenberg resulting in a penalty kick. Fitzsimmons would drill the shot with a laser to the right of the goalie, giving the Matadors a 1-0 edge at the 2:39 mark of play.
Despite the early lead, the Matadors continued to attack the Eagle defense, outshooting them 5-2 in the opening stanza. Arteaga would take a pair of shots in the opening 10 minutes including an attempt that was saved by Kelsee Winston. Although Delgado did not post a save before intermission, she was very active in the period as she made numerous stops on passes and free kicks into the box. After a Saige Lyons shot in the 28th minute, the Eagles were held without a shot for the rest of the period.
SECOND HALF
Delgado would continue to be tested in the second half. She made her first save off a shot from Madison Kem in the 50th minute and she would see a Sariah Keister shot sail wide of the net moments later. The Eagles earned three corner kicks over a two-minute span at one point but could not come away with the equalizer. Eastern Washington actually hit the net in the 63rd minute but the attempt was wiped away due to an offside call.
With the Eagles continuing to pressure the Matador defense, Delgado would stand tall making pivotal plays in the box. After breaking up several plays, she made her second save of the match in the 66th off a Brooke Dunbar attempt. The Eagles earned a late corner kick but CSUN's defense held firm, allowing no shot attempt. CSUN regained possession in the closing minutes, leading to a pair of misses from Arteaga before securing the win.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"I thought we played 20 to 30 good minutes in the first half. In the second half, we played hard - I don't know if we played well but we played hard. [The strategy today] was to keep the ball. I felt we had too many careless turnovers on Friday. I think we were a little careless with the ball today but luckily it didn't punish us.
I felt we battled really hard in the 18. We took care of the 18 extremely well and we dodged a couple of bullets. [Eastern Washington] came after us today. That's a heck of a team over there and they have an unbelievable spirit with how they play."
GAME NOTES
Fitzsimmons' goal was her second of the season and seventh of her career. She has now recorded three game-winning goals with the Matadors. CSUN has posted four wins through its first six matches for the first time since 2015 season.
UP NEXT
The Matadors continue their homestand with a Friday night match-up with CSU Bakersfield on Sept. 13. Kickoff from Matador Soccer Field is set for 7 p.m.
