Four Score in Double Figures, CSUN Knocks Off UCSB
1/22/2020 9:19:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---Four Matador scored in double figures as CSUN Men's Basketball (8-13, 3-2 Big West) notched its second-straight conference road win, beating UC Santa Barbara (12-7, 1-3 Big West) 83-75 on Wednesday at the Thunderdome. Sophomore Lamine Diane tallied a game-high 27 points with seven rebounds and three assists while sophomore Darius Brown II scored a season-high 21 points to go with eight assists. Junior Terrell Gomez added 15 points and sophomore Jared Pearre chipped in with 10 points.
Â
CSUN shot 52.5 percent from the field and made 9-of-16 from 3-point range (56.3 percent). The Matadors also knocked down 12-of-14 from the free throw line (85.7 percent). In contrast, the Gauchos shot 46.5 percent for the night, making 9-of-27 from downtown (33.3 percent). UCSB did win the rebounding battle, 36-24, but the Matadors had the edge in points off turnovers at 23-8.
Â
FIRST HALF
The Matadors started off quickly, scoring the game's first six points including four points off second chances. Diane later drilled a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 15-8 at the 13:42 mark of the half. Moments later, Diane grabbed a defensive rebound and found Gomez in transition for a 3-pointer to give the Matadors an eight-point edge (18-10) at the first media timeout. However, the Gauchos fought back and scored the next 12 points as they capitalized on a near five-minute CSUN scoring drought.
Â
Trailing by four, Brown II finally got the Matadors back into the scoring column with a traditional 3-point play. Elijah Harkless would then give CSUN the lead on a turnaround jumper. Diane made an off-balance fadeaway jumper, pushing the lead to 27-24 but the Gauchos ended the half on an 11-6 run. After a Jared Pearre dunk gave CSUN a one-point edge, Matt Freeman drilled a late 3-pointer to put the Gauchos in front 35-33 at the break.
SECOND HALF
The teams traded four leads in the early going of the second half before Diane drained a jumper to even the game at 48-48. Gomez would put the Matadors ahead on a 3-pointer after a steal from Pearre. CSUN held a slim one-point lead until a 6-0 run, capped by a Brown II 3-pointer, pushed the Matadors in front 62-55 with 9:47 to play. Moments later, Brown II sank a 3-pointer on the fast break to make it an eight-point game.
The lead still stood at eight after a Diane jumper, but the Gauchos made one final push with five-straight points to pull within 69-66 after a trey from Amadou Sow. Out of a timeout, Diane threw down a put-back to stretch the lead to five. After a defensive stop, Harrick hit the bottom of the net on a corner 3-pointer. Brown II pushed the lead even further to 11 points (77-66) on a step-back 3-pointer to beat the shot clock with 3:14 remaining. UCSB scored five-straight points in the final minute but the Matadors picked up a dunk from Diane with nine seconds left to ice the game.
GAME NOTES
Brown II finished 4-of-5 from 3-point range while Gomez knocked down 3-of-5 in the win. Diane converted on 8-of-9 from the free throw line and made 9-of-22 from the field. Off the bench, Harrick chipped in with six points in 25 minutes.
For the Gauchos, Max Heidegger scored 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"What I liked, and it was the emphasis the last couple of days, we played together, we moved the ball and made some extra passes for great shots. We end up with 18 assists and four turnovers. You've got to step up and make shots but we're a much better team when the ball moves. And the ball moved today. I thought our guys were interested in trying to help each other play better. That's the key for us. If we have that kind of energy and play that well we have a chance to be a pretty good team."
