Matadors Head to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (8-13, 3-2 Big West) concludes a two-game road trip on Saturday when it takes on Cal State Fullerton at 7:30 p.m. The game will stream live on the BigWest.TV while Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister are on the call in an audio broadcast at GoMatadors.com/Radio.
The Matadors got back to their winning ways with an impressive 83-75 win at UC Santa Barbara (12-7, 1-3 Big West) on Wednesday. The loss for the Gauchos was just their third at the Thunderdome in 10 games this season. In a game with 14 leads changes and six ties, the Matadors finally gained separation after an 9-2 run near the midway mark of the second half. Lamine Diane scored 18 in the second half while Darius Brown II chipped in with 12 points as well to help CSUN outscore UCSB 50-40 over the final 20 minutes.
Diane finished with a game-high 27 points against the Gauchos while he added seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Brown II scored a season-high 21 points and dished out eight assists. Terrell Gomez had another solid effort with 15 points and Jared Pearre gave the Matadors a lift in the middle with 10 points.
With a 3-2 record in Big West play, the Matadors are a half-game behind conference leaders Hawai'i (3-1) and UC Irvine (3-1) for first place. CSUN could post its best six-game start to conference play since 2007-08 with a win over Fullerton on Saturday. The 2007-08 team went 7-0 to start league play that season. The Matadors could also record their first three-game road winning streak since the team won three straight in Feb. 2008 over UC Davis, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.
Gomez remains the Big West leader in a host of categories including points per game (20.6), minutes per game (36.9), free throw percentage (93.3), field goals made (144) and 3-point field goals made (75). He is also third in the nation in 3-point field goals made and free throw percentage while he ranks eighth in total points (433). Elijah Harkless is also first in the Big West in steals per game (2.0) and ranks second in defensive rebounds per game and sixth in overall rebounds per game (6.3). Brown II is holding firm in second place in assists per game (4.4) and assists to turnover ratio (3.2). In the nation, Brown II's assists to turnover ratio is eighth-best in the Division I men's basketball. As a team, CSUN leads the Big West Conference in scoring at 74.9 points per game.
Saturday represents the 82nd all-time meeting between CSUN and Cal State Fullerton. The Titans are 46-34 in the head-to-head series, which dates back to Dec. 1960. Fullerton has won the last six meetings including sweeping the season series over the last two years. CSUN lost by a 78-71 margin in both games last season as Fullerton denied the Matadors a 4-2 start to league play with a win in Titan Gym last January. Diane was sensational against the Titans in 2018-19, averaging 32.0 points and 15.0 rebounds. At Titan Gym, Diane tied a CSUN Division I scoring record with 39 points in the seven-point loss.
A Closer Look at Cal State Fullerton
After starting league play 0-3, the Titans (7-13, 2-3 Big West) have won two-straight games including posting a road win at UC Davis (78-74) on Wednesday. Fullerton is 2-6 at Titan Gym this season and is looking to snap a two-game home skid. The Titans earlier this season knocked off UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, 77-74, for the program's first win over a Power Five team since 2011. Fullerton leads the Big West in opponent 3-point percentage (31.0) while its third in turnovers per game (13.1) and blocks per game (3.0).
Three Titans average in double figures led by Austen Awosika at 13.8 points per game. Awosika is eighth in the Big West in scoring while he ranks fourth in assists per game (3.9). Brandon Kamga is ninth in the league in points per game (13.2) to go with 4.7 rebounds per game. In nine games this season, Jackson Rowe is averaging 13.1 points and 6.8 rebounds.
