NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - In the first match between the two teams since 1987, the visiting Menlo College Oaks came into The Matadome and handed CSUN a four-set loss in a non-conference match Friday night at The Matadome.
Set scores were 25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 26-24 as the unbeaten Oaks remain 8-0 with the exhibition win. The loss drops Matadors to 1-5 on the season.

SET 1
The visiting Oaks out-hit the Matadors .300 to .185 in the opening set to win by two. After Kyle Hobus gave CSUN an early 5-4 lead with an ace, the Oaks used a 6-1 run to take the lead for good at 10-6. A Wetter solo block cut the deficit to 12-10 before Menlo again stretched the lead to four at 15-11. Ptaszynski then served consecutive aces, capping a 5-1 CSUN run, to pull the Matadors even at 16-16. CSUN could not wrestle back the lead however as the Oaks would lead by as many as two points on a host of occasions down the stretch. Leading 24-22, Menlo committed a service error before cashing in its second set point.
SET 2
The Matadors continued to struggle in set two while the visitors upped their hitting in dominating the second frame. The Oaks would hit .565 in the set while limiting CSUN to a .160 clip. Menlo held a series of three-point leads early on before Hobus' hitting error gave the visitors a 14-10 cushion. Another Matador hitting error extended the Menlo lead to five (16-11) and CSUN would only get within five the rest of the way.
SET 3
Behind the strong serving of Ryan DeWeese, the Matadors claimed nine of the first 11 points in the third set. Wetter's kill kept the CSUN advantage at five (12-7) when the visitors rallied behind a 10-5 run to knot the score at 17-17. A DeWeese kill and a pair of Ptaszynski aces highlighted a 4-0 Matador run that put CSUN on top 21-17 while forcing a Menlo timeout. A pair of Wetter kills, followed by a Walters kill on set point sent the Matadors to the 25-20 win.
SET 4
The final set was the tightest of the match, featuring 12 ties and four lead changes. CSUN overcame an early 7-4 Menlo lead as a Walters ace knotted the score at 10-10. The score remained tied at 16-all when the Matadors used a Wetter kill followed by a Wetter-Ptaszynski block to open up an 18-16 lead. CSUN hung on to a two-point lead at 20-18 lead when Menlo scored three straight to take a 21-20 lead. A Ptaszynski kill evened the score and the teams traded sideouts until 24-24 when a CSUN hitting error and a Menlo block on match point sent the Oaks to the 3-1 win.
