Matadors Drop Season-Opener to McKendree
1/9/2020 9:45:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The CSUN Men's Volleyball team dropped its season-opener Thursday as McKendree upset the 13th-ranked Matadors in five sets at the UCSB Asics Invitational at Rob Gym.
The first-ever match between the two teams went to Bearcats by the score of 25-19, 27-25, 15-25, 16-25, 19-17.
KEY STATISTICS
• The CSUN starting lineup featured four players making their Matador debut as redshirt freshman Kyle Hobus led all hitters in the match with 24 kills, hitting .346 in his first collegiate match.
• Junior Maciej Ptaszynski added 13 kills (.333) and seven digs while junior Steven Rotter chipped in 12 kills (.185) followed by Daniel Wetter with 10 kills (.600). Wetter committed just a single hitting error on 15 swings to go with a team-high three blocks.
• Sophomore setter Taylor Ittner recorded his fourth career double-double with 46 assists and a match-high 13 digs.
• The Matadors overcame a slow start to out-hit McKendree .336 to .229 for the match. CSUN had six aces, two each from Ptaszynski and Rotter, but committed 21 service errors.
• Zach Schnittker led the Bearcats with 13 kills (.172).
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"I think anytime you start a match like we did, the first of the year, you can have some first-match jitters and I think that happened tonight. Some of our guys have never played at this level but what was encouraging is that we played really well in sets three and four and we hit over .400 in the fifth set. We've got a great group of guys, we just didn't make enough plays at the end. We're going to be better moving forward this weekend and continue to get better over time."
SET 1
A Bearcat setting error pulled the Matadors within 7-6 in the opening set before McKendree put together an 11-5 run to open up a 18-11 lead. CSUN rallied to get within five at 21-16 following a Rotter kill but the Matadors would get no closer in the opening frame.
SET 2
A pair of Hobus kills gave CSUN a pair of early leads, the last at 6-5, before the Bearcats outscored the Matadors 4-2 over the next six points to take a 9-7 lead. Neither team would lead by more than two over the next dozen points when a 4-0 Matador run gave CSUN a 21-18 cushion. Three straight McKendree points knotted the score when kills from Wetter and Rotter put the Matadors back in front 23-21. Still leading 24-22 following a Hobus kill, CSUN was outscored 5-1 over the final six points to drop set two 27-25.

SET 3
Despite being in a 2-0 hole, the Matadors bolted out to an 11-3 forcing an early McKendree timeout. A Wetter kill opened up a nine-point CSUN lead (15-6) and the Matadors would lead by as many as 10 (17-7) following a Bearcat hitting error. The CSUN lead wouldn't dip below seven points the rest of the way as the Matadors pulled within 2-1 following the 25-15 win.
 Â
SET 4
CSUN didn't let up in the fourth set as a Ptaszynski kill gave the Matadors an early 7-4 lead. Consecutive kills by Hobus opened up an 11-6 CSUN lead which forced a McKendree timeout. A triple block by Hobus, Wetter and Paul Rzepniewski followed by another Hobus kill extended the lead to 13-6. Two straight points by the Bearcats trimmed the lead to five at 13-8 but McKendree would get no closer the remainder of the set as the Matadors won going away 25-16.
 Â
SET 5
The Bearcats claimed the first two points of the decisive fifth set before Hobus' kill evened the score at 4-4. Trailing 6-5, an Ittner kill sparked a 3-0 CSUN that gave the Matadors an 8-6 lead. A Rotter-Wetter block gave CSUN a 10-7 lead and the Matadors would lead by as many as four at 12-8 following a Rotter kill. The Bearcats however answered with a 4-0 run, capped by a pair of CSUN hitting errors, to knot the score at 12-12. Rzepniewski's kill out of a timeout gave the Matadors a 13-12 lead before two straight McKendree points set the Bearcats up with match point at 14-13. Hobus kills saved a pair of match points before CSUN had a swing at the match at 16-15. But two straight kills by McKendree gave the Bearcats another match point at 17-16 before Wetter answered with a kill saving another match point. But consecutive kills by McKendree's Patrick Ross sent the Bearcats to the 19-17 win and the 3-2 decision.
