Meet CSUN's Under Armour Faculty
11/20/2020 9:26:00 AM | General
The CSUN Under Armour Faculty are a group of professors and lecturers committed to assisting student-athletes in their academic success and professional development. The group was started in 2016 by Professor and Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Ed Jackiewicz and has since grown to nearly 30 faculty members from various majors across campus.
Over the past few years, this group has assisted students through workshops, panel discussions, game attendance and one-on-one conversations. They are here to help you, the students. In the coming months, GoMatadors.com will introduce you to the various members of CSUN's UA Faculty.
Dr. Ashley Samson
Associate Professor, Dept of Kinesiology
Sport Psychology Consultant, Matador Athletics
Started at CSUN in 2011
PhD. Louisiana State University
Teaching/Research areas: Sport psychology, sport sociology, self-perceptions in performance situations, mindfulness, athlete transitions, women in sport
I was born in New Orleans and grew up there, doing all of my schooling between Louisiana and Texas. I was a college athlete, Track & Field and Crew, and remain active and competitive in distance running and equestrian sport today. Originally, I was on track to become a clinical psychologist, or what you think of when you think of a "traditional therapist," but then I learned about sport psychology and have never looked back. I'm such a nerd about all things "brain/behavioral science" and love learning about new breakthroughs or consulting techniques to help people reach their full potential.
One of my favorite things about my job is helping athletes become more confident and knowledgeable about themselves, both on and off the field. I love being a part of their journey at CSUN and really enjoy watching the progression from freshman to senior year as they realize their potential and grow more certain in their identity. I've had the opportunity to visit Costa Rica twice (!!) with outstanding groups of student-athletes and my colleague, Ed, and it was so incredible to watch the learning and growth that happened while they experienced a new culture. It was definitely a major perk of my job! Feel free to reach out to me with any questions related to being a successful student at CSUN, athlete peak performance, or anything related to horses, running or yoga!
