Matadors Clinch Series with USF, Pick Up 7-3 Win
2/15/2020 5:11:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Senior Jayson Newman drove in four runs and finished with three hits to help lead CSUN Baseball (2-0) to a series-clinching 7-3 victory over San Francisco on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. Junior Kai Moody went 2-for-5 with two runs scored while junior Carlos Arellano finished 2-for-4. Sophomore Blaine Traxel allowed two runs on five hits over six quality innings to earn the victory.
GAME BREAKDOWN
For the second-straight game, the Matadors struck first in the opening inning. After reaching base on a hit-by-pitch with one out, Jose Ruiz stole second base with two outs. Newman followed with a timely hit to right field to plate a hustling Ruiz.
Newman would deliver again in the third inning with two outs to double the Matador lead. Moody legged out an infield single to begin the frame and later advanced up to third on back-to-back groundouts. Newman stepped to the plate and belted a 2-1 pitch into the gap in right-center field to make it a 2-0 game.
Traxel pitched around a leadoff single in the top of the first and received a timely 4-6-3 double play to end the second inning. The right hander would find his grove over the next two innings, retiring the next six batters to take a two-run lead to the fifth.
Held scoreless for the entire series, USF finally broke through in the top of the fifth behind the long ball as Nick Yovetich stroked a solo home run. Traxel though retired the next two batters to keep the Matadors in front.
Up again in the fifth, Newman delivered once more with another RBI hit. Ruiz reached to start the inning on a hit by pitch and Doremus worked a walk before Newman lined a single down the right-field line for the Matadors' third run. Later in the inning, Doremus scored on a wild pitch and an error from second baseman Kyle Knell led to two more runs coming across. In the frame, the Matadors only put together one hit but scored four times to take a 6-1 lead.
Newman would notch his fourth RBI of the afternoon in the seventh by working a bases-loaded walk that scored Moody.
Traxel surrendered another run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Jacob Munoz but retired the next two batters to make way for the bullpen.
USF threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. Newman made the move to the mound to attempt to squash the rally but walked Jack Winkler to force in a run. After striking out a batter to leave the bases loaded on Friday, Elijah Garcia came out of the bullpen and repeated his effort on Saturday. Garcia went to a 2-2 count on Munoz before fanning the first baseman for the final out of the frame.
Blake Schriever made his season debut in the eighth and retired six of seven batters to secure the CSUN win.
GAME NOTES
Newman's four RBI are a new career-high, surpassing the three he drove in last season against Kansas State. Making his third career start, Traxel's six innings pitched on Saturday are also a new career-high. Coffey finished 1-for-4 in his first career start at third base.
For the Dons, Tyler Villaroman and Yovetich had two hits apiece.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I thought it was a good baseball game today. It wasn't as easy as yesterday. There were some situations that we put ourselves in and they put themselves in situations where they were one swing away from tying the game. As I shared before, in this ballpark where it could get offensive in a hurry, you're never safe with the lead. I think we kind of helped open the door a little bit. Some of our middle to late-inning relief put some guys on with free passes. Eli Garcia came in and got another big out. He's played a little part in facing two hitters over two days but he's a big part of our two wins.
We're continuing to learn. I liked the way we played today, we did some good things. As I shared with the team, Jayson Newman had a rough day offensively yesterday and he responded with a good day and that's baseball. And someone will step up tomorrow. That's the sign of a good team, we have a way to go to be a good team, but they're starting to feel like they have the capability of being a good team."
