Matadors Take First Two at GCU Classic to Stay Unbeaten
2/21/2020 10:30:00 PM | Baseball
PHOENIX, Ariz.---CSUN Baseball rallied to defeat Fordham 12-5 and knocked off Grand Canyon 5-3 in its first two games of the GCU Classic on Friday. The Matadors improved to 6-0 on the season, tying the 1995 team for the program's second-best start in its Division I era.
Junior Jason Ajamian had a three-hit game with four RBI in the opener against Fordham and added a hit in game two. Five Matadors recorded multiple-hit games between the two contests. On the pitching side, sophomore Blake Sodersten earned his second-straight win in the nightcap as he allowed two runs on three hits with five strikeouts. CSUN's bullpen worked seven combined innings on Friday, allowing just two runs.
CSUN-Fordham Recap
CSUN fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the seventh inning, roaring back with 11 runs over the final three frames to down Fordham. Senior Newman finished 4-for-5 with two RBI while freshman Mason Le and had three hits. With two more runs batted in, Jayson Newman has recorded at least one RBI in five-straight games.
Blaine Traxel surrendered three-straight hits to the Rams to the start the second, resulting in the game's first run. After an RBI single from Jason Coules, Traxel received help from his defense to limit the damage. On an infield hit from Matt Tarabek, Le tagged out Coules trying to advance to second base. Traxel then induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the frame.
Â
CSUN would even the game in the third inning behind a timely two-out single from Le that plated Clarke, who had singled earlier in the frame.
Â
The score remained tied until the bottom of the fourth when the Rams broke through for three runs. Coules had an RBI double in the frame and Tarabek followed with an RBI single. The Rams' fourth run came across on a throwing error from third base, which scored Coules.
Â
Trailing 4-1, the Matador bats came alive in a huge seven-run top of the seventh that turned the tide of the contest. The first three batters reached base to start the inning then Kai Moody worked a walk to force in a run. Le would tie the game with a two-run single before Newman delivered with a go-ahead RBI single. A wild pitch scored another run, which was followed by RBI singles from Sean Skelly and Ajamian to give the Matadors an 8-4 lead.
Â
After 13 came to the plate in the seventh, eight more came up in a four-run eighth that broke the game wide open. Newman stroked another RBI single in the inning and Ajamian belted a three-run double to push the lead to eight (12-4).
Â
Out of the bullpen, Dwayne Angebrandt worked 1.2 shutout innings, striking out two batters while Elijah Garcia worked the final 2.1 innings, allowing one run in the ninth. Angebrandt earned the victory, his second in as many games for CSUN.

CSUN-Grand Canyon Recap
Playing in their second game of the day, the Matadors received strong pitching in a 5-3 win over the rested Lopes. Sodersten pitched into the sixth inning while the combination of Cruz Daddario and Blake Schriever combined to throw 3.1 innings out of the bullpen. Moody picked up two hits at the top of the order.
The Matadors maintained their momentum from game one and struck quickly against the Lopes in the first inning. With two outs and nobody on, Blake Doremus hammered a solo home run to give CSUN a 1-0 lead.
Sodersten struck out two in the opening inning and two more an inning later. In the second, he pitched around a two-out throwing error from third base to retire David Avitia for the third out. GCU though tied the game in the third, capitalizing on a leadoff triple from Jake Jarvis leading to a sacrifice fly from Channy Ortiz. Sodersten found his groove over the middle innings, retiring eight-straight GCU batters at one point.
CSUN took the lead right back in the fourth as two GCU errors opened the door for a three-run inning. Angelo Bortolin began the inning with a walk before Carlos Arellano reached on an error from Ortiz at short. After Ajamian singled to load the bases, Clarke reached on a fielder's choice to score a run. Moments later, Moody struck the ball up the middle where Ortiz could not field the ball cleanly. The error resulted in two CSUN runs, pushing the lead to 4-1.
Sodersten recorded the first two outs in the sixth but the Lopes picked up a two-out walk and an RBI double from Brock Burton to cut the lead to 4-2. Daddario entered the fray and recorded the final out in the sixth and pitched a perfect seventh. Schriever took over in the eighth and cruised through a 1-2-3 frame.
After CSUN added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a Jose Ruiz RBI single, Schriever returned to the mound in the ninth where he gave up a two-out home run to Dominic Grissom. Schriever though retired the next batter to end the game.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"After a very long day of baseball our guys endured many things and battled to win both games. Today was the first time we were down by multiple runs this season and we responded with a seven-run inning. The best part about this early season streak is that we've had many contributions from different guys. In game two, Blake Sodersten had another solid start and Cruz Daddario and Blake Schriever did a great job of closing the door. I'm very proud of the effort this team continues to give with each opportunity."
