COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"We had some breakdowns in set three but overall it was a really good win tonight. I thought we played some good volleyball in the first two sets but give Vanguard credit, they played us tough tonight. We're continuing to improve but it's going to get really serious from here on out so we've got to keep getting better."
SET 1
Krzmarzick's service error was the only point the visitors scored early on as the Matadors jumped out to a 4-1 lead. After another CSUN service error kept the Lions within two at 6-4, the Matadors rolled off four straight points to open up a 10-4 cushion. A Vanguard kill kept the Lions within striking distance at 11-7 when three straight Vanguard miscues opened up a 14-7 CSUN lead. Another Lion hitting error gave the Matadors their largest lead of the set at 19-10 and Walters' kill on set point gave CSUN a 25-17 win.
SET 2
The visitors held a pair of two-point leads in the early stages of the second set, the last at 8-7 when a Krzmarzick kill cut the lead to one. But an ensuing 3-1 run by Vanguard opened up an 11-8 lead for the visitors. A Kill from Ptaszynski followed by a Greg Pond ace again cut the lead to one but CSUN could not take the lead until a 3-0 Matador run, capped by a triple block by Krzmarzick, Walters and Paul Rzepnieski, put CSUN in front 17-15. But Vanguard answered with a 4-1 run to retake the lead 19-18 before kills by Krzmarzick and Wetter along with a timely Rzepnieski ace gave the Matadors the lead for good at 21-19.Â

SET 3
After the two teams traded the lead 11 times in the second set, the final set featured a total of 17 lead changes. A 4-0 Matador run erased a 6-5 Vanguard lead early on. CSUN led 12-9 following a Krzmarzick kill when the Lions outscored the Matadors 4-2 over the next six points to pull within 14-13. Another Walters kill gave CSUN a 19-15 lead and the Matadors still led by three at 23-20 when Vanguard mounted a rally. Wetter's kill ended a two-point run by the Lions and the Matadors had a swing at the match at 24-22. Vanguard saved two match points before Walters answered with a kill giving CSUN another match point at 25-24. Two straight Vanguard points gave the Lions set point (26-25) when Rzepniewski's kill knotted the score at 26.Â
The Matadors saved another set point at 27-26 when Krzmarzick's kill evened the score. A second ace by Rzepnieski gave CSUN yet another match point at 28-27 before the the Lions saved five more match points, the last at 34-33. But a Vanguard kill followed by a Ptaszynski hitting error set the Lions up with set point at 35-34 when a Vanguard service error followed by a Krzmarzick kill and a Lion hitting error sealed the 37-35 CSUN win.
