CSUN Goes 1-1 To Open San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO—CSUN split a pair of games to begin the San Diego Classic Friday afternoon at the University of San Diego.

GAME 1
- The Matadors defeated the University of North Dakota 4-3 in Friday's opener.
- Jaymi Steward's RBI ground out drove in Kira Cauley in the bottom of the first broke the seal for the Matadors. Jessica Alexander's 2-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth plated Savannah Favre and Cauley for a 3-0 CSUN advantage.
- With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Fighting Hawks' Dani Romero reached on an error. Jannay Jones worked out a seven-pitch walk against Matador starter Kenedee Jamerson. Morgan Flann pinch-ran for Romero and scored on a Jocelyn Kirk single. Ashlynn Uvilla tied the score with a single that allowed Kirk and Jones to score. Jillian James relieved Jamerson and struck out Alicia Young to end the inning.
- Alyssa Vazquez singled through the left side to lead off the CSUN sixth. Joran Kaeka followed with an infield single. Favre successfully sacrificed both runners up a base. After Cauley popped out to short, Alexander's single to left allowed Vazquez to score the game-winning run. James retired North Dakota in order in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
- Alexander was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Cauley went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Uvila was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Fighting Hawks (4-11).
GAME 2
- Weber State defeated CSUN 3-2 to conclude Friday's play.
- Faith Hoe led off the Weber State second with a home run, giving the Wildcats the lead. Megan Stevens put the Matadors up 2-1 with a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the fifth.
- Courtney Petska led off the Weber State fifth with a double off of James. With one out, Landi Hawker singled to give runners on second and third. Chole Camarero doubled in both Petska and Hawker to return the lead to the Wildcats. Ashlyn Visser singled to give Weber State runners on the corners. James struck out Faith Hoe before getting Lauren Hoe to line out to get out of the inning.
- James hit McKell McCuistion to begin the Wildcats' sixth. Stevens relieved James. Her first batter was Brooke Moeai who successfully laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance McCuiston up a base. Petska grounded out for out number two. Takesha Saltern walked to bring up Haker who lined out to short for the final out. Cauley singled with two outs in the top of the seventh but was thrown out at second to conclude the game in favor of the Wildcats (6-10).
- Kate Donaldson tossed a complete-game four-hitter for Weber State. Donaldson struck out four and walked one. James pitched six innings, taking the loss. She struck out eight and walked two. Hawker was the only player on either team to record multiple-hits as she was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

- CSUN (12-4) continues to play at the San Diego Classic on Saturday when the Matadors face Mount St. Mary's (Md.) at 9 a.m. and Brown (11:30 a.m.).
