NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf program gets the 2020 spring season underway this week (Feb. 6) as the Matadors compete at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate at Waikoloa Beach Resort's Kings Course in Waikoloa, Hawai'i.
CSUN's opening tournament in Hawai'i is a 20-team field including a trio of top-10 teams (No. 2 Texas Tech, No. 3 Georgia Tech and No. 6 Pepperdine, along with defending champion No. 54 Oklahoma State). A total of 15 teams in the field are ranked in the Top 100, including seven in the Top 25, making it one of the most competitive collegiate tournaments in the country.
"This week, we begin building towards the Big West Championship tournament in April," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "This tournament will be the strongest field we'll see and it will be a good test for us right out of the gate. This team definitely has talent but we're still growing and learning; we're trying to improve each and every tournament and the results will come. The guys are excited to start off the spring in Hawai'i with such a great field."
CSUN competed in four tournaments in the fall, posting a pair of top-10 finishes including a season-best seventh-place showing at Fresno State's Nick Watney Invitational in October. The Matadors, who carded a team-low round of 280 in Fresno, closed the fall with an eighth-place finish at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.
A pair freshmen paced the Matadors in the fall for Bracken's squad. Mats Ege played in all four tournaments, posting a scoring average of 71.4 to lead all CSUN players. Fellow freshman Eirik Thomassen finished the fall just behind Ege with a scoring average of 71.7. Ege had the Matadors' lone top-10 finish, placing 10th in Stockton while Thomassen had a pair of top-20 finishes, including a 12th-place showing at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado.
Gabriel Barnes and Blake Brothers each fired a round of four-under 68 to tie for CSUN's low round of the fall. Barnes' low round came in the opening round of CSUN's Bill Cullum Invitational in October while Brothers carded a 68 in round two of the same tournament.
Ege (71.4), Thomassen (71.7), Tomas Helgo (75.3), Paul-Louis Gachet (74.1) and Brothers (73.4) will comprise Bracken's lineup in Hawai'i while Brandon McDonough (74.5) will compete as an individual.Â
