WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i - Freshman Mats Ege is in the top-30 while the CSUN men's golf team is in 17th-place after the opening round of The Amer Ari Invitational Thursday at Waikoloa Kings' Course.
Ege, who finished the fall portion of the 2019-20 season as CSUN's low scorer, opened with a two-under 70 which is one shot off his season-low round. Sophomore Paul-Louis Gachet is in the top-40 of the 123-player field after carding a one-under 71.
In a field featuring trio of top-10 teams and 15 teams ranked in the Top 100, the Matadors opened with a three-over 291 which is just six strokes out of the top-10. No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Georgia Tech share the opening-round lead at 274 with Arizona State (275) third in 20-team field.
CSUN SCORES
"Overall I thought we played well today, we just didn't finish very well. I thought we should have been one or two-under as a team but it just didn't happen today. The opportunities will be there again for us tomorrow, so hopefully we can take advantage. As a group, this team is more than capable of shooting under par."
The Matadors will be paired with Stanford, Hawai'i-Hilo and Pacific for round two which tees off Friday morning with a shotgun start beginning at 7:30 a.m. local time.
