SDSU's Sixth Inning Rally Sends Aztecs Past CSUN 7-4

SAN DIEGO—San Diego State scored three times with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as the Aztecs defeated CSUN 7-4 in the final game of the San Diego Classic Sunday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Diego State (14-8) took the lead in the bottom of the second. Shelby Thompson led off the inning with a triple and came around when Alexa Schultz grounded out to second.
- The Aztecs put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the third. With the Matador infield in, Sadie Langlet hit a grounder to Aailyah Swan at short. She threw home to get the lead runner for the second out. Thompson flew out to center to wrap up the frame.
- The Matadors stranded the tying run at second in the top of the fourth. After a CSUN error, Summer Hargett's two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth put the Aztecs up by three.
- With one out in the top of the fifth, Kira Cauley singled. Alexander's single advanced Cauley to second. With Megan Stevens at the plate, a Marissa Moreno wild pitch pushed both runners up a base. Stevens was intentionally walked to load the bases. Maggie Balint relieved Moreno to face Jaymi Steward. With the count 1-0, Steward hit her second career grand slam home run to right field to give the Matadors the lead.
- Kendee Jamerson walked on four Balint pitches. Alyssa Vazquez went seven pitches against Balint before striking out. Swan went seven pitches before working out a walk. Jessica LaPierre flew out to center to end the inning.
- Kiera Wright led off the SDSU fifth by reaching on a CSUN error but was thrown out at second on Sara Lillie's grounder to third. LaPierre threw out Lillie attempting to steal for the second out. Langlet doubled to right to put the tying run back on base. Riley Thies pinch-ran for Langlet as Thompson came to the plate. Jillian James, who relieved Jamerson in the fourth, hit Thompson on a 2-2 pitch. Schultz popped out to short on the first pitch she saw from the 5-10 righty for the final out of the inning.
- Alexander doubled for the second time with two outs in the top of the sixth. Stevens walked again in front of Steward. This time Balint got the best of Steward as she grounded out to complete the frame.
- Maddi Ayers tied the score at four when she led off the SDSU sixth with a home run. Taylor James issued two-out walks to Taylor Adams and Wright. Lillie drove in the game-winning run with a ground-rule double. Langlet added a pair of insurance runs with a single that plated Lillie and Wright. Thompson walked. Schultz fouled out to right to put the inning to rest.
- Vazquez singled with one out in the top of the seventh. Jordan Kaeka pinch-ran for her with Swan coming to bat. Swan struck out before LaPierre lined out to end the game.
- Alexander was 3-of-4 while Vazquez went 2-for-3. Six of the nine CSUN starters recorded at least one hit. Lillie, Langlet, and Hargett all recorded two hits for the Aztecs. Both teams had nine hits.

- "It was a tough battle today. We were in it until the end. It's promising, knowing that we didn't play our best, but we could've taken the win. We will continue to get better."
UP NEXT
- CSUN (14-5) returns to San Diego next weekend when the Matadors enter the University of San Diego Tournament. Play begins on Saturday in a rematch against Mount Saint Mary's (0-13) at 1:30 p.m.
