CSUN Sweeps Day One Of San Diego Tournament

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—CSUN opened the San Diego Tournament Saturday with a pair of wins to improve to 16-5 on the season.

- CSUN scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Mount Saint Mary's 7-6 in Saturday's opener.
- The Mount took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Mariah Goode two-RBI single. Jessica Alexander tied the score in the bottom of the second with a single that drove in Aaliyah Swan and Kira Cauley. Megan Stevens followed and put the Matadors into the lead with a two-run home run.
- Mount Saint Mary's got one back in the top of the third when Maggie Kane plated Vanessa Martin with a single. A pair of two-out CSUN errors led to two runs for the Mount and a 5-4 lead. Mount Saint Mary's scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth.
- Swan led off the CSUN sixth with a walk, chasing Mount Saint Mary's starter Jordan Weaver. Amanda Berkley came on in relief. Her first batter was Cauley. On Berkley's first pitch, Swan stole second. Cauley ran the count to 2-2 before doubling in Swan. Alexander was next and the Oceanside native responded with a two-run home run to return the advantage to CSUN 7-6.
- Maggie Kane began the MSM seventh with an infield single against Jillian James who relieved Kenedee Jamerson in the sixth. James struck out Elizabeth King. Kane was thrown out by Jessica LaPierre attempting to steal second. Goode lined out to center to end the game.
- CSUN outhit MSM (2-17) 10-7. Alexander was 3-for-4 with her fifth home run and four RBI. Swan charted two hits and two stolen bases. With a single in the second, Cauley extended her hitting streak to 15 on the year. Cauley went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Maggie Kane paced The Mount by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
- Jillian James tossed a three-hitter as CSUN shutout Villanova 2-0 in the nightcap. The Wildcats received votes in two of the four major softball top 25 polls to begin this week.
- Kiarra Crockett-Pope homered to lead off the bottom of the second. The Matadors added an insurance run on Jaymi Steward's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. James retired the first 11 batters she faced before Chole Smith singled with two outs in the fourth.
- Villanova put the tying run on in both the fourth and fifth with two outs, but each time James was able to retire the Wildcats. Villanova had the tying run on in the seventh with one out. James struck out Caroline Jones and got Arissa Amarillas to fly out to end the game.
- James won both ends of the doubleheader to improve to 6-2 on the year. Needing only 98 pitches, James struck out six and did not walk a batter. Steward was 3-for-3 while Cauley extended her hitting streak to 16 with a 2-for-3 performance.
- "We figured out a way to win against Mount Saint Mary's but it wasn't our best effort. We recovered well from game one against Villanova. We came out and competed against Villanova."
