CSUN Unable to Overcome Slow Start in Loss to UCSB
1/22/2021 6:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---UC Santa Barbara (9-3, 3-2 Big West) led from start to finish in handing CSUN Men's Basketball (5-5, 1-2 Big West) a 105-58 defeat on Friday at The Matadome. Junior TJ Starks returned to the lineup, scoring a career-high 29 points on 10-of-19 shooting to go with five rebounds. Senior Lance Coleman II played in his first game since Dec. 19 and tallied 11 points. The Gauchos jumped out to a 22-6 lead and never looked back in taking the opener of back-to-back games this weekend.
The Matadors struggled from the field throughout the day, shooting 36.7 percent for the game while the Gauchos shot 60.9 percent from the floor. UCSB also made 11-of-19 from 3-point range (57.9 percent) compared to the Matadors' 6-of-25 shooting (40.0 percent). The Gauchos out-rebounded the Matadors 42-25 and had a 50-22 advantage in points in the paint.
FIRST HALF
The Gauchos jumped on the Matadors at the outset, racing to a 12-2 lead after the first five minutes of the game. CSUN would go just 2-of-9 from the field to start the game and committed five turnovers while the Gauchos made 8-of-12 shots to start and led 22-6 at the 12:00 mark of the half. The combination of Starks and Coleman II helped carry the load offensively, scoring 14 of the Matadors' first 16 points but CSUN could not make a dent into the double-digit deficit.
JaQuori McLaughlin knocked down three shots from beyond the 3-point arc and finished with 13-first half points. His jumper with 7:58 left to play pushed the Gaucho lead to 33-16. CSUN would trim the deficit to as little as 14 points in the final five minutes of the half before UCSB scored six-straight to push the lead to 20 points. Robinson Idehen capped off the scoring in the half with a late dunk as the Matadors went into the break trailing 47-28.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors shot just 30.3 percent in the second half while the Gauchos shot an outstanding 66.7 percent in putting the game out of reach. The Matadors would only see the lead fall under 20 points at the 16:37 mark of the stanza when Vante Hendrix drilled a 3-pointer but the Gauchos responded with an 11-0 run. Starks led the way in the period, scoring 14 points including going 5-of-5 at the free throw line.
Nine different Gauchos scored points in the second half, led by Josh Pierre-Louis' 12 points. Pierre-Louis threw down a dunk that extended the UCSB lead to 47 points with 1:46 on the clock.
GAME NOTES
With three assists in the game, Brown II pushed his career assist total to 359 as he moved ahead of Matador greats Josh Greene (2010-14) and Ian Boylan (2001-05) and into sole possession of fourth place in the Matadors' all-time assist list. Both Greene and Boylan finished their respective careers with 358 career assists. Up next, Brown II would catch Landon Drew (2012-16) for third place on the list with 34 more assists.
For the Gauchos, McLaughlin had a team-high 21 points while Pierre-Louis and Idehen had 14 apiece.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"Number one, we seemed out of sync and out of rhythm. You've got to give [UCSB] credit, they played terrific. Sometimes you could be out of sync and the other team doesn't play great and you could survive it. On the other hand, I think we kind of fell apart and collapsed. We couldn't score, we got impatient and we ended up taking bad shots. We ended the game with five assists, I'm not sure if ever I had a team that had five assists. Offensively, we got in a hurry and defensively, we weren't very good at all. This falls on me and our whole staff. We've got to get better. The good news is you get to play tomorrow. We don't have to wait long so I'm sure we'll come out tomorrow with a lot more energy than we did today."
UP NEXT
The Matadors and Gauchos conclude their series on Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will stream live on BigWest.TV with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call.
