NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Senior Sydney Gilbert's goal in the 84th minute broke a scoreless tie and would be the difference in CSUN's (3-13, 2-4 Big West) 1-0 win over UC Riverside (4-8-2, 1-4-2 Big West) on Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. With the 1-0 triumph, the Matadors earned their first shutout of the 2021 season. In net, Amanda Delgado picked up four saves including a crucial stop in the final minutes to preserve the shutout.
The Highlanders outshot the Matadors 10-6 in the match and edged CSUN in shots on goal, 4-3. Corner kicks also went UCR's way at 7-1 in the contest. A total of 14 fouls were committed with CSUN whistled for eight of them. The Matadors' Cora Willcot, Cindy Arteaga and Kacie Garrity all saw yellow cards.
FIRST HALF
The opening 10 minutes saw the Highlanders post a pair of corner kicks along with a shot missed by Natza Marin. The Matadors would get a solid look at the net in the ninth minute when a long pass up ahead to Alyssa Aguilar inside the box resulted in a eight yard shot that was kicked away by goalkeeper Caela Kaio. Minutes later, UCR would gain a scoring opportunity on a header from Akari Shimizu but Delgado was in position to make a two-handed save.
The Highlanders would post four of the six shots in the first half but both sides managed to only put a single shot on frame. CSUN's defense blocked an attempt from Daphane Mendez while the Matadors thwarted four total corner kicks from UCR to keep the game scoreless.
SECOND HALF
Delgado continued to stand tall for the Matadors in front of the net in the early going of the second half. On a free kick in the 48th minute, the Highlanders were able to get a quality look at the net but Delgado made a diving save on a shot from Shimizu. Moments later, a shot from Marin was blocked while a second shot from Alexandra Hargrave was wide from eight yards out. On the flip side, the Matadors were whistled for three offside calls as they looked to pressure the UCR defense during the second half. Ashley Cruz would take a shot from on top of the box in the 72nd minute before Kaio made a save for the Highlanders.
With the final minutes ticking away, the Matadors finally broke through on a play up the middle of the field. Cindy Arteaga picked up a turnover near midfield and dribbled the ball up the center of the pitch. Arteaga sent a pass through several players to a streaking Gilbert inside the 18-yard line. Gilbert found herself in a 1-on-1 with Kaio before she kicked the ball through the defense and into the net to put CSUN on top 1-0.
In the waning minutes, the Matadors withstood the Highlanders' final attacks including a shot from Leigh Polson that Delgado stopped from sneaking inside the left corner post. CSUN committed a foul with nine seconds to play, giving the Highlanders a free kick but the Matadors kept the ball away from the net to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
Delgado earned her 17th career victory in net for the Matadors, which put her into sole possession of fifth-place on the school's all-time win list. She also collected her 12th career shutout.
