CSUN Visits Fullerton and Hosts CSUB to Wrap Up Season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer concludes the 2021 season this week with a pair of Big West Conference matches. The Matadors (3-15, 2-6 Big West) visit Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ before hosting CSU Bakersfield on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the season finale. The first 100 fans at Sunday's match will receive a free CSUN t-shirt.
CSUN suffered a pair of home losses last week, which eliminated the Matadors from postseason contention. Last Thursday, Long Beach State edged CSUN 1-0 as a goal in the 27th minute held up in the contest. The Matadors would stay even with UC Irvine for one half before the Anteaters scored five unanswered goals in the second half for a 6-1 decision on Sunday night.
Ashley Cruz recorded the Matadors' lone goal of the week in the first half of the UC Irvine match. Cruz would score off a set piece where Ashly Torres and Alyssa Aguilar each received a touch on the play. The goal was Cruz's second of the season while Torres picked up her second helper of 2021. Aguilar recorded her first assist of the year and fourth of her career.
Heading into the final two matches of 2021, Cindy Arteaga and Christiane Sundstrom are tied for the team lead in points with six while Sundstrom, Sydney Gilbert, Brooke Mobeck, Gabriela Robles and Cruz all have a team-high two goals. Arteaga is ranked seventh in the Big West in shots (34) and eighth in assists (4). In net, Amanda Delgado sits in sixth place in the league with 51 saves while she has a 2.60 goals-against-average.
This week will represent the final collegiate appearances for the Matadors' seven-member senior class consisting of Gilbert, Delgado, Cora Willcot, Briana Rios, Kimberly Anderson, Sophie Yanez and Sadie Armijo. Gilbert, who joined the team in 2017, will finish just outside the top-10 in team history in games played but has totaled 10 points in 75 matches with CSUN. A starter since her freshman season, Delgado is ranked fourth in team history in shutouts (12), fifth in matches in goal (44), minutes in goal (3,921) and wins (17), and sixth in saves (179). All joining the Matadors in 2018, Willcot has recorded seven points in 39 matches, Rios has three points in 34 games and Yanez has two points in 28 matches. On defense, Anderson has two points in 31 games played while Armijo has seen action in 28 contests with the Matadors.
Cal State Fullerton leads CSUN in the all-time series 17-8-2 and has won the last two meetings. Thursday contest will be a rematch of the 2019 Big West Tournament championship match where the Titans defeated the Matadors 4-0 at Titan Stadium. CSUN is winless in its last five matches played at Cal State Fullerton and has not won a road game in the series since 2011. The Matadors will be looking to play the role of spoiler on Thursday as the Titans are still battling for spot in this season's conference tournament.
The Matadors hold a 5-1-1 record against CSU Bakersfield in the all-time series. CSUN is undefeated over the last four matches with CSUB and has not lost to the Roadrunners since 2009. In the teams' last match in 2019, each side had an own goal in a 1-1 tie. The Matadors are 2-1-1 in four all-time home matches in the series. Sunday's match is the first-ever Big West Conference meeting between the two programs.
A Closer Look at Cal State Fullerton
The Titans come in with a 8-9 overall record and 5-3 mark in Big West play. After UC San Diego (1-0) last week, the Titans have won four-straight games. Fullerton is in fifth place in the Big West standings but just one point back of the fourth and final spot for the Big West Soccer Championship set to begin next week. Overall, the Titans have won eight of their last 11 matches. Head coach Demian Brown is in his 15th season at the helm of the Titans.
Callie Petrey-Juarez is fourth in the Big West in goals (8) and points (19). Behind Petrey-Juarez, Karla Rodriguez has five goals and 12 points while Haley Brown has netted four goals and 11 points. Reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week, Noa Schumacher has a 1.35 GAA with 45 saves in eight matches. In the Big West, the Titans are third in the league in goals scored with 26.
A Closer Look at CSU Bakersfield
CSUB owns a 1-14-2 overall record and seeks its first-ever Big West Conference win (0-7-1). The 'Runners have lost six-straight decisions after dropping matches to UC Irvine (5-0) and Hawai'i (4-0) last week. Before facing CSUN in the regular season finale, CSUB visits UC Riverside on Thursday. Sebastian Vecchio is in his third season as head coach of CSU Bakersfield.
Jamie Ingrassia has two of CSUB's five goals this season while Chelsee Duran, Angelica Hurtado and Darian Tatum all have one goal apiece. In net, Flavia Burrell has tallied 109 saves to go with a 2.29 GAA.
