Matadors Drop Road Finale at Cal State Fullerton, 1-0
10/28/2021 9:22:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FULLERTON, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer dropped its final road match of the season to Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, on Thursday evening at Titan Stadium. The Matadors (3-16, 2-7 Big West) would withstand a majority of the Titans' attacks on the night but a goal in the 52nd minute proved to be the difference in the contest. Amanda Delgado racked up six saves including a stop late in the first half on a penalty kick.
The Titans outshot the Matadors 20-5 and led 7-1 in shots on goal. Fullerton also racked up a 16-5 advantage in corner kicks. CSUN was whistled for 11 of the 13 fouls in the match. Erin Anderson saw the yellow card in the 45th minute.
FIRST HALF
Delgado made the first of her six saves in the sixth minute of play, stopping a shot from Delaney Lindahl. The Matador defense would be the story of the first half as the unit withstood 14 shot attempts and seven corner kicks. In the 22nd minute, a Fullerton corner kick put the ball dangerously close to the net before Gabriela Robles kicked the ball away from six-yard line. Karla Rodriguez also had her shot saved by Delgado in the 29th minute.
On the flip side, the Matadors were held to three shots in the half. Christiane Sundstrom registered the Matadors' first shot in the 19th minute while the Titans blocked shots from Briana Rios and Ashly Torres. After Megan Day hit the cross bar in the 39th minute, the Titans would have their best shot of scoring in the 45th minute when a CSUN foul resulted in a penalty kick. Callie Petrey-Juarez took the penalty shot but Delgado made a timely diving save to keep the match squared at 0-0.
SECOND HALF
CSUN continued to thwart offensive threats from the Titans including three corner kicks but Fullerton finally broke through with the go-ahead goal in the 52nd minute. Lindahl played the ball on the right wing before crossing the ball up the middle of the box. The Matadors were able to get a deflection on the ball but Haley Brown regained the possession and struck a low shot into the corner of the netting to give the Titans the lead.
CSUN looked for the equalizer for the remainder of the half and would get a quality look at the net when Sundstrom shot from above of the box but the attempt went wide. Kacie Garrity put a shot on goal in the 70th minute as goalkeeper Noa Schumacher made a two-handed save. The Matadors picked up three corner kicks in the half including a late look in the 86th minute, however, the Titans kept the ball out of the net.
GAME NOTES
Sundstrom had two of the Matadors' five shots in the match. On the backline, Anderson, Garrity, Robles and Sami Alarcon played the full 90 minutes.
CSUN has played eight total one-game matches this season and has gone 3-5 in those contests.
Thursday's match was a rematch of the 2019 Big West Tournament finals that saw the Titans defeat the Matadors 4-0. Cal State Fullerton has won the last three meetings in the series, all of which have been played at Titan Stadium.
