CSUN Upsets No. 30 UC Santa Barbara 2-0
10/30/2021 10:25:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN upset nationally-ranked UC Santa Barbara 2-0 Saturday night in the 2021 finale for the Matadors. UCSB was ranked 30th by CollegeSoccernews.com entering the contest.
The Matadors came out aggressively as Jordan Isibor and Oscar Cardenas recorded shots that Leroy Zeller saved in the first 11 minutes. CSUN continued to press as Jamar Ricketts and Oscar Cardenas posted back-to-back attempts in the 16th minute that were blocked near the UCSB goal. CSUN would outshoot the Gauchos 10-4, 4-2 on goal in the first half as the score remained 0-0 heading into halftime.
The Matadors and UCSB traded shots on goal in the first five minutes of the second half. CSUN got on the board at the 62:16 mark. Brendan Hildreth dribbled toward the UC Santa Barbara goal before passing the ball back out to John Andersen. Andersen's blast from approximately 25 yards out hit the cross bar and went in to break the seal.
"UCSB backed up with our midfielders and forwards which gave us a lot of space in front of the net," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We had a couple that were very close from long range. John stepped into one and it went into the back of the net."
The Gauchos worked towards the CSUN goal and earned three consecutive corner kicks that spanned from the 70th to the 71st minutes. The Matadors turned away UCSB on each set piece. The 81st minute saw a Jorge Aldana effort blocked back out to Thaabit Baartman who went wide right.
With UC Santa Barbara pressing in the 87th, Matador goal Cooper Wenzel punched the ball out to Dylan Gonzalez. Gonzalez took the pass and was able to set off on a fast break towards the UCSB goal. Working by himself against Zeller, Gonzalez stopped just in front of the goal and passed the ball to Jamar Ricketts who with a wide-open net, recorded his third goal of the year to put the match away for the Matadors.
"Cooper was unbelievable tonight," Davila said. "He is going to be a big part of our future. Dylan's speed and athleticism was incredible. To have the wherewithal to give the ball in front of the net to Jamar is insane. What a play."
CSUN outshot the Gauchos 14-10 for the night, 8-5 on goal. Wenzel, redshirt freshman, recorded his first career shutout as he made five saves. Zeller, who entered the match 17th in Division I in saves with 63, made six.
Despite the loss, UCSB (10-4-4) and tying for the regular season championship (6-1-2) with UC Irvine, the Gauchos will receive the top-seed in the Big West Tournament which gets underway next week. UC Santa Barbara maintained a better goal differential against UCI to clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
"We owe to the Big West to play our best," said Davila. "A true first seed has to come out. We tried to do our best. It has been coming, the ball bounced our way, and we were able to win. We are built on hard work and gritty players, and we showed it tonight."
CSUN finishes 2021 with a 4-13-1 overall record and a 3-5-1 mark in Big West play. The 10 Matador points will place CSUN eighth overall in the league as the top six make the Big West Tournament.
