LAKEWOOD, Calif.- Cal State Northridge (5-6) defeated Wisconsin, 7-4, Friday night at The Mayfair Invitational. Senior Micah Putnam set a new career high with 4 RBIs and also blasted her first home run of the season against the Badgers.
Putnam now has nine RBIs and is batting .212 with six runs scored on the season. Junior Jaclyn Rymer finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate, scoring a pair of runs and driving in one. She now leads the team with 10 runs scored and is hitting .333 for the season. Sophomore Karla Chaparro also had two hits for Northridge against Wisconsin to raise her batting average to .227.
Junior Debbie Duran tossed her fourth complete game of the season in picking up the win, improving her record to 5-3 with a 2.71 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 41.1 innings of work. She scattered eight hits over the seven innings against Wisconsin, fanning five while walking two.
Northridge got on the board in the first inning, scoring a run. Jaclyn Rymer led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Tracy Allen. Following a wild pitch, Jaci Carlsen was hit by a pitch and then stole second.
Christina Saenz then drew a walk to load the bases and Micah Putnam earned an RBI with a bases-loaded walk to score Rymer. However, the Matadors would strand three runners on base in the inning.
With two outs in the second, Allen deposited a double in the left-center gap to bring home Rymer, who had reached in the previous at-bat on a fielder's choice. Saenz then sent a hard ground ball to the Wisconsin second basemen, who booted the ball into right field and allowed Allen to come around and score to make it 3-0 in CSUN's favor.
Putnam then picked the perfect time to get her first extra-base hit of the season, blasting a three-run home run to dead center to increase CSUN's lead to 6-0.
The Badgers answered with four runs in the bottom of the second, three of which were unearned, off Northridge starter Debbie Duran.
Northridge got one run back in the top of the third to extend its lead to 7-4. Kristen Mihm led off the frame with single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Krystal Raphael. Following a groundout that moved Mihm to third, Rymer laced a single to center for an RBI.
The Matadors resume play at the Mayfair Invitational on Saturday, facing Iowa State at 11 a.m. and BYU at 1:15 p.m.
