No. 3-Ranked UCSB Tops CSUN in Straight Sets
3/26/2021 6:51:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The visiting UC Santa Barbara Gauchos put together a dominating offensive effort in a 3-0 sweep over the CSUN Matadors Friday evening at The Matadome.
The third-ranked Gauchos committed just three hitting errors in the match while hitting a robust .518 in the 25-13, 25-18, 25-18 win. UCSB improves to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the Big West with the win while the Matadors slip to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• After hitting .393 as a team in a 3-1 win over No. 12 UC Irvine last Sunday, the Matadors were limited to a .143 (28-16-84) clip by the Gauchos on Friday.
• Four CSUN hitters had a team-high five kills as Cole Chea hit .417 on 12 swings without an error. Senior Maciej Ptaszynski hit .300 on 10 attacks and also added an ace. Daniel Wetter, who came in leading the nation in hitting percentage, had five kills on .214 hitting to go with two aces while freshman Griffin Walters hit .056 on a team-high 18 swings.
• Ptaszynski and senior libero Sean Mitchell led the Matadors with six digs apiece while setter Kyle Merchen notched 25 assists and three digs in the loss.
• CSUN out-aced the visitors, 5-1 but UCSB had a 7-1 advantage in blocks in addition to the sizable advantage in offensive efficiency.
• UCSB's Randy DeWeese led all hitters in the match with 18 kills, connecting at a .654 clip on 26 swings. Roy McFarland also reached double figures with 11 kills on 17 errorless attacks (.647).
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"All the credit to UCSB; they just didn't make any errors and it's very tough to beat a good team when they play as well as they did tonight. We're most certainly not in mid-season form yet and they exposed a lot of our weaknesses at this point of the season. We'll make some corrections between now and tomorrow, we'll have to be ready to go."
SET 1
After the Gauchos forced an early Matador timeout at 10-7, a Walters kill and a Keenan Sanders service error kept CSUN within two 11-9. But an ensuing 6-2 UCSB run opened up a 17-11 cushion while forcing a final Matador timeout. The visitors didn't let up out of the timeout, outscoring CSUN 8-2 down the stretch to win the opening set going away 25-13.Â
SET 2
CSUN trailed 6-5 early in the second set after Walters put down a Matador kill. A Ptaszynski kill kept the margin at two (11-9) before two straight Gaucho points opened up a four-point lead. A Ryan DeWeese ace kept the deficit at two (13-11) and CSUN still trailed by two at 14-12 when UCSB used a 5-1 run to force another Matador timeout at 19-13. Another Walters kill kept CSUN within striking distance at 21-17 but the visitors ended the set on a 4-1 run to seal a two-set lead with the 25-18 win.Â
 Â
SET 3
The final frame ended in much the same fashion as the Gauchos used a sizable run midway through the set to erase all doubt. After a Ryan DeWeese kill cut the UCSB lead to 11-10, the Gauchos outscored the Matadors 8-2 over the next 10 points to extend the lead to 19-12. Ptaszynki's ace and another DeWeese kill pulled CSUN within four at 20-16 but the Matadors would get no closer, faliing by the same 25-18 final. Â
