Matadors Drop Straight-Set Decision at No. 3 UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Maciej Ptaszynski had a team-high seven kills but third-ranked UC Santa Barbara swept CSUN for the second straight match Saturday at Rob Gym.
The Gauchos, who hit .518 as a team in Friday's 3-0 win in Northridge, out-hit the Matadors .425 to .152 on Saturday. In improving to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big West, UCSB also excelled on the defensive end, posting 39 team digs to CSUN's 19 while out-blocking the Matadors 8.0 to 6.0. The loss drops CSUN to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Ptasyinski posted a team-high seven kills and a team-leading six digs, hitting .250 on 20 swings. Ptaszynski also had one ace, giving the Matador senior at least one ace in all four matches this season.
• Kyle Hobus added six kills (.222) while Jano Tello chipped in five kills (.048) and a pair of blocks while taking a team-high 21 swings.
• Senior libero Sean Mitchell matched Ptaszynski with six digs while Griffin Walters served a match-high two aces. CSUN setter Kyle Merchen notched 22 assists, five digs and two blocks.
• UCSB's Randy DeWeese led all hitters for the second straight match, connecting for 20 kills on .471 hitting. to go with seven digs and four blocks.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"Santa Barbara's defense and blocking is a little bit ahead of where we are right now and that was a big difference today. I thought the guys played really hard and we're definitely moving in the right direction. We're certainly not discouraged, we're just going to keep working and getting better and be ready for UC San Diego next weekend."

Neither team hit particularly well in the opening set as UCSB hit .292 to CSUN's .032. The Matadors scored the first three points and still held a three-point lead (7-4) following a Ptaszynski kill. A triple block by Merchen, Walters and Cole Chea kept the Matadors in front 15-12 when a 3-0 UCSB run knotted the score at 15-15. After a Gaucho ace, Chea connected for a kill and the score remained tied at 16-all. A DeWeese kill then fueled a 3-0 UCSB run which forced a Matador timeout at 19-16. A Daniel Wetter kill, a Gaucho service error and a Walter ace pulled CSUN within 20-19 before UCSB rallied for the final five points to seal the set 25-19. Â

Trailing 7-3 early in the second set, kills from Ptaszynski and Hobus pulled the Matadors within two at 7-5. An ensuing 5-0 UCSB run, three straight coming on Roy McFarland kills, opened up a 12-5 Gaucho lead. Trailing by as many as nine points, CSUN got within four (21-17) on Ptaszynski's ace but the Matadors would get no closer in falling 25-17.Â

A co-block from Tello and Philip Barker gave CSUN an early 6-4 lead before the hosts rallied for six straight points to force a Matador timeout at 10-6. CSUN remained with three at 10-7 and were within four at 13-9 when a 5-1 UCSB run opened up an 18-10 Gaucho advantage. A late kill from Ptaszynski and a Gaucho hitting error cut the deficit to 24-19 before DeWeese connected for his 20th kill on set point sending UCSB to the 25-19 win.

The Matadors open a two-match home-and-home series with UC San Diego next Friday (Apr. 2) in The Matadome at 7 p.m. The two teams cap the series Saturday in La Jolla.
