Matadors Drop Two Games to UC Riverside
4/17/2021 6:27:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (6-13, 6-13 Big West) came away with 18 total hits in its Saturday doubleheader against UC Riverside (10-16, 8-11 Big West) but the Highlanders received solid pitching throughout the 18 innings played and won both games at Matador Field. The Matadors fell in game one 5-1 and dropped an 8-4 decision in game two. Robert Bullard finished with four hits and an RBI in the doubleheader while Brandon Bohning, Mason Le and Jose Ruiz all had three hits on the day.
GAME ONE RECAP
CSUN out-hit UC Riverside 8-5 in the opener of the doubleheader but Tucker Juline held the Matadors to just one run over eight solid innings on the mound.
The Matadors scored first for the second-straight game against the Highlanders. In the third, Bohning singled and stole second base to start the frame. Two batters later, Bullard delivered an RBI double to put CSUN ahead 1-0.
In the early going, CSUN starter Gavin Lizik retired seven-straight batters over three shutout innings. In the fourth though the Highlanders took advantage of CSUN miscues to take the lead. Lizik hit the first two batters to start the inning then a throwing error off a failed pickoff attempt moved both runners into scoring position. Moments later, Jacob Shanks would reach base on an error at third base to bring in UCR's first run. A wild pitch with two outs brought in another unearned run, giving the Highlanders the lead.
After coming up empty in the fifth, UCR added to its lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. In the frame, Lizik sat down the first two batters but three-straight Highlander hits, capped by a two-run home run from Nathan Webb put CSUN behind 5-1.
The third inning would be the only blemish against Juline who frustrated the Matador bats over the next five innings. After retiring eight of nine batters, Juline allowed a leadoff single to Kai Moody then a walk to Ryan Ball in the sixth. However, Juline rebounded to retire the next three batters to end the threat.
CSUN would collect two singles in the seventh and a hit in the eighth but Juline halted both rallies to keep the Matadors off the scoreboard. Juline exited in the game in the ninth, giving room for Jake Lachemann who tossed a scoreless inning to seal a UCR win.
Juline scattered eight hits and allowed one run to go with two strikeouts to earn the victory. Lizik tossed a career-high six innings, allowing five runs on five hits but only three runs were earned.
Jeremy Hassel gave the Matadors a lift out of the bullpen, retiring all nine batters he faced over three shutout innings.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Highlanders pounded out 15 hits in game two while the Matadors left 13 runners on base as UCR clinched a series win.
UCR jumped in front with a two-run first inning, capitalizing on miscues behind the plate. Ely Stuart would score the game's first run on a passed ball and a second run scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dylan Orick. The Highlanders added to their lead in the second inning on an RBI single from Cole Pofek.
The Matadors trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the third behind a two-out hit from Ruiz. Le kicked off the inning with a double and would later touch home plate on a single from Ruiz. However, the Matadors left two runners on base in the third when starter Tyler Frazier retired Denzel Clarke to end the inning.
The third inning would be the beginning of several scoring opportunities for the Matadors but strong Highlander pitching limited the damage throughout the afternoon. In the sixth, CSUN loaded the bases with one out and scored a single tally on a sacrifice fly from Bohning. With two outs, Jayson Newman lined out to shortstop Anthony Mata who made a leaping catch to end the threat. UCR reliever Shamus Lyons left two runners on base in the seventh and two more in scoring position in the eighth inning.
The Highlanders scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to add to their lead as three of those runs scored with two outs. Orick made it an 8-2 game in the top of the ninth with a one-out RBI double.
The Matadors put together one last rally in the bottom of the ninth and nearly brought the tying run to the plate. After back-to-back one-out walks, Ruiz drove in a run on a chopper over third base. CSUN trimmed the deficit to 8-4 on a fielder's choice from Jason Ajamian. A comeback though was not in the cards as Lyons retired Bohning with runners at the corners to wrap up the game.
GAME NOTES
Ball walked five times on Saturday and collected a hit en route to extending his on-base streak to 18-straight games. Bullard also stretched his hit streak to seven in a row. Ruiz recorded his sixth multiple-hit game of the season.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I've seen it on the offensive side of the ball and the defensive side of the ball, the opportunities are there for success and we're not taking advantage of it. I look at the three games, we've had some offense. In total, we've had 30 hits but we haven't been touching home plate enough, and that's the name of the game, how many times you touch home plate. On the mound, it was similar to yesterday's game, when we put runs on the board, the next inning we'd go out and walk a guy or hit a guy. Those are not ingredients to success. This happens when you are not successful, the fear of failure is starting to creep in. This is a difficult game and a failure sport. All you've got to do is keep playing hard."
