Matadors Win Fifth Straight, Take Opener with UC Davis 10-6
5/7/2021 6:26:00 PM | Baseball
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Matadors jumped on UC Davis starter Jake Spillane in the top of the first for three runs on five hits. The first four batters reached to start the game, highlighted by RBI singles from Jose Ruiz and Jayson Newman. Two batters later, Denzel Clarke made it 3-0 with an RBI single up the middle.
CSUN added another run in the third inning on a two-out single from Skelly. Earlier in the inning, Newman hit a leadoff single then recorded his first career stolen base with Ryan Ball at the plate.
Blake Sodersten kept the Aggies hitless through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third. UC Davis plated two runs on two hits while Sodersten hit a batter and threw two wild pitches.
CSUN's offense came alive in the fourth inning and pushed the lead to 9-2. After Carlos Arellano walked to begin the frame, Kai Moody doubled. Ruiz followed with a two-run ground-rule double and Newman later added another run on a sacrifice fly. Clarke capped the inning with a two-run home run that lined over the left-field wall.
Sodersten exited the game in the fourth, giving way for Hoskins who recorded the final three outs of the inning while a single run scored on a sacrifice fly.
Hoskins would have his best inning in the fifth when he struck out a batter and retired the side in order.
However, the Aggies kept on chipping away at the lead and plated runs on RBI singles from Spencer Gedestad and Michael Campagna in the bottom of the sixth. The Aggies loaded the bases with two outs before Hoskins retired Jalen Smith to finally end the inning.
Zuko Tillman gave the Matadors a much needed shutout inning of relief in the seventh before Jackson Cunningham entered in the eighth inning. Cunningham recorded two-straight outs to begin the inning but three-straight hits, capped by an RBI double from Nick Iverson cut the CSUN lead down to 9-6. Much like Hoskins, Cunningham worked out of a jam by forcing Smith to groundout, leaving two runners on base.
After leaving the bases loaded in the eighth, CSUN came away with an insurance run in the ninth inning. Brandon Bohning walked to start the inning and would move up to second base after Arellano was hit by a pitch. Robert Bullard moved both runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt before Bohning touched home plate on a wild pitch with Ruiz at the dish.
Blaine Traxel came out for the ninth inning and would have to earn his way to a shutout frame. The Aggies capitalized on a one-out error at shortstop and picked up a single from Colton Evans. Traxel though retired the next two batters to nail down the victory.
GAME NOTES
Moody finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored to post his team-high 12th multiple-hit game of the season while he extended his hit streak to 11-straight games. Clarke, Newman and Ruiz each recorded their team-best sixth multiple-RBI game. Bullard's walk to begin the game stretched his on-base streak to 17 games.
Ruiz's RBI single in the top of the first was his 100th career hit with the Matadors. Clarke also homered for the seventh time this season.
The Matadors' bullpen combined to toss six innings with three runs allowed on eight hits to go with no walks.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Today was good for our team because anytime you win on a Friday it's a good day. After jumping out to an early lead, I believe we got sloppy from the mound. Blake Sodersten just wasn't himself today but I believe our relief efforts from Hoskins, Tillman, Cunningham and Traxel were able to pick him up. Early on, the offense led by Jose Ruiz, Denzel Clarke and Sean Skelly were hitting on all cylinders but the second part of the game we had too many at-bats and scoring opportunities slip away.
We need to come out tomorrow with a better focus from the first pitch to the last pitch on both sides of the ball. This team is doing many good things now, which leads to success but we need to work hard to just keep getting better."
