Serrano Announces Addition of Yost, Promotion of Surrey

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Head coach Dave Serrano has announced the addition of Todd Yost to the CSUN Baseball coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach as well as the promotion of Elliot Surrey to a full-time director of baseball operations.

"I'm very excited to be able to add someone like Todd to our coaching staff," said Serrano. "I've known Todd for many years and have seen how he has grown as a coach being around baseball. He is a young man who is very passionate about the game, passionate about people, a tireless worker and will bring lots of energy each day.

"Elliot has been a part of our staff for the last two years as a volunteer operations director," added Serrano. "Words can't describe how valuable he has been to our program in so many areas. His intelligence and work ethic are off the chart. It's with great pleasure that Elliot will continue his role as a full-time employee now."

Yost joins CSUN after working last season as a volunteer assistant coach at Division II Trevecca Nazarene University under Chase Sain. With the Trojans, Yost worked with the team's infielders and hitters. In 2021, the Trojans won the NCAA Midwest Region and advanced to the College World Series for the first time in school history. Trevecca also won the Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles while the infield posted the conference's best fielding percentage.

Prior to Trevecca, Yost was an assistant coach at Fullerton College in 2019-20 under Chad Baum and served as an infield coach for the Orange County Riptide of the California Collegiate League in 2019.

Yost played all four infield positions during his collegiate playing career. He played for Fullerton College before transferring to Westmont College where he helped the Warriors advance to the NAIA Regionals in 2018 and 2019.

Yost graduated with a degree in communication studies at Westmont College in 2019.

"This is an exciting opportunity for me to be a part of this staff that has such good experience in the Big West Conference," said Yost. "I'm very excited to learn from them. I can't wait to be around the team and help continue to build this program."

Surrey has spent the past two seasons as the Matadors' director of operations under Serrano. He previously worked as undergraduate assistant in 2018 with UC Irvine.

Surrey played professional baseball in the Seattle Mariners' organization from 2016-18 before suffering a career-ending injury. A left-handed hurler, Surrey made 23 career appearances on the mound and registered a 3.58 ERA at the pro level.

As a collegiate player, Surrey was a standout at UC Irvine where he played for Mike Gillespie from 2013-16. He was a three-year starting pitcher and helped the Anteaters advance to the College World Series in 2014.

Surrey graduated from UC Irvine in 2018 with a degree in film and media studies.

"I'm excited to be back for another year under coach Serrano," said Surrey. "Being surrounded by this entire coaching staff everyday has allowed me to grow not only in baseball but as a person as well."
