NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball's head coach Dave Serrano has announced the promotion of Eddie Cornejo to associate head coach for the 2021-22 season.
"I'm very proud to promote Eddie into his new role," said Serrano. "For two years, I've seen how hard and professionally he has worked with his recruiting efforts and his efforts on the field to continue to build this program. The types of players that he has been able to attract to CSUN has continued our growth as a baseball program. His recruiting efforts, knowledge of the game, personality and attention to detail in everything he does is going to make Eddie a very successful head coach one day."
For the past two seasons, Cornejo has served as recruiting coordinator and assistant coach to the baseball team. He has helped the Matadors post an overall 31-24 record and two winning seasons.
CSUN finished tied for fourth in the Big West Conference standings this past season while the program registered its fourth winning conference record since joining the league. The Matadors were near the top in several offensive categories in the Big West and led the league in stolen bases (60) and walks (198) in conference play. CSUN also registered its best on-base percentage (.388) in 19 seasons.
With Cornejo on the bench, four Matadors earned all-conference honors in 2021 including Kai Moody who earned All-Region First Team recognition. Denzel Clarke also was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Oakland Athletics.
In Cornejo's first season, the Matadors jumped out to a 10-5 record in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 campaign. CSUN would start out 7-0 for the first time since the 1993 season.
"I appreciate everything coach Serrano has done for me at CSUN," said Cornejo. "I'm looking forward to working with such great people involved with the program."
Prior to CSUN, Cornejo spent six seasons as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara from 2012-17 where he was recognized as the Top Recruiter in the Big West Conference by D1Baseball.com. He helped coach the Gauchos to the postseason three times highlighted by a College World Series trip in 2016. Cornejo also coached at San Jose State in 2019 and UC Riverside in 2011 while he also served as an interim head coach at Riverside City College in 2010.
