CSUN Drops 1-0 Decision to California Baptist
9/17/2021 9:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN dropped a 1-0 decision to California Baptist in men's soccer action Friday night at Matador Soccer Field.
Â
The first two shots came off the feet of the Lancers but were not on goal. The first attempt on goal of the night was in the 11th minute when Khalid Hunter was stopped by Evan Ince. The fourth effort of the half from CBU would be the first on goal when Cooper Wenzel saved an Antonio Gomez's bid.
Â
Edson Palos' shot in the 25th was saved by Ince. What proved to be the game winner was scored at the 26:19 mark. Tete Vacas' cross found Liad Mordechi in front and he converted from five yards out.
Â
The Matadors threatened with three minutes to play. Jamar Ricketts sent a cross towards the box where Chris Silva just missed heading the ball past Evan Ince for the game tying goal. The cross would result in a California Baptist goal kick. Â
Â
Play became more physical in the second half as three yellow cards were issued in the first 10 minutes. The Lancers' Danny Garcia was booked for his second yellow of the night in the 64th, resulting in a red card and an ejection. Despite playing a man down for the remaining 26+ minutes, the Lancers were able to keep the Matadors at-bay.
CSUN mounted one final charge. With less than a minute to play, the Matadors were awarded a corner kick. The ball was passed towards the CBU goal where Ricketts went wide as the Lancers improved to 4-1-1 on the year.
Â
"It wasn't a great performance tonight," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "I thought we were a little hesitant. Hopefully we can learn from this and how important the mental aspect of the game is, and we have to a better job of playing together as a team."
Â
The Lancers outshot the Matadors 10-3, 3-2 on goal. Both teams had four corner kicks. Six cards were issued, five yellow, one red. Ince made two saves in earning the win. Cooper Wenzel started in goal and took the loss as he played the opening 45 minutes. David Preys closed the match between the pipes. Both made one save.
